Cairns bakery: Babinda Bakery owners to sell business

The owners of the Far North’s most popular bakery are selling the business they’ve run for the past 10 years.

THE owners of the Far North’s most popular bakery, Mick and Annette McAlloon, are selling the business they’ve run for the past 10 years.

Famous for producing the best cream buns in the region, the pair have put Babinda Bakery on the market and are after a quieter life in Brisbane, closer to their sons.

Accolades, thanks and appreciation certificates line the wall behind the shop’s counter and the customer experience is second to none.

“We sell 3000 pies per week and 500 cream buns on a Saturday morning alone,” Mr McAloon said.

“We have a team of bakers dedicated to producing the very best we possibly can.”

It only takes a quick scroll through the comments and ratings on TripAdvisor to learn that

Babinda Bakery is worth the stop.

Many claim it as the best bakery in the Far North.

The McAlloons don’t think there’s a secret recipe to their success but have always focused on quality products, friendly service and giving back to their community.

They provide almost 20 job opportunities in the small town, many of which are filled by youth entering the workforce for the first time.

“We know small businesses in regional areas are vital to the communities they support and Babinda Bakery is no different,” Mrs McAlloon said.

“We have always tried to give back to our community as much as we can; after all they are our biggest champions and we are grateful for the support we’ve always had from our community.”

Tourists have also played a significant role in the success of the Babinda Bakery.

Some have travelled from as far as South Australia just for a cream bun; or have detoured from an inland route for a pie.

Kleinhardt Business Brokers agent Cam Charlton is selling the business and expected a “high volume of interest”.

“Its reputation is quite remarkable, it’s profitable and with growing turnover and some significant opportunities to be had, there’s very good reason to be interested,” he said.

The business recently won a State Government grant to purchase a new pie oven that will

increase capacity significantly.
