A man under police guard at hospital has been charged with murder after he allegedly stabbed an elderly homeless man to death in Sydney’s east on Saturday.
Mark Thomas, 60, was walking down Oxford St in Bondi Junction about 8pm on Saturday, December 22 when he was approached by a 30-year-old man.
CCTV footage reveals the two men passed each other on the footpath when some comment was made and they began to fight.
Mr Thomas, who was homeless and well-known in the area, was allegedly stabbed a number of times in the chest and back during the scuffle.
Mr Thomas died at the scene despite efforts from Eastern Suburbs police and paramedics to resuscitate him.

The 30-year-old, who was known to police prior to this incident, then staggered across the road saying “I’ve been stabbed” while waving a knife.
He was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital under police guard with a stab wound to the stomach.
He was today formally charged with the murder of Mr Thomas. Police were previously unable to interview him due to his injuries.
He was refused bail and will appear in Parramatta Bail Court via video link from his hospital bed tomorrow.
Strike Force Ellerman has been established to investigate the circumstances which led to Mr Thomas’ death.
It is understood the men did not know each other before the violent attack occurred.
