A HUGE battle-scarred “icon” saltwater crocodile is being held at a secret Cairns location after being trapped 1km from a popular Babinda swimming hole.
Department of Environment and science wildlife officers captured and removed the 5m crocodile from a cane drain about 2km upstream from where the drain joins the Russell River.
The department had been monitoring the animal after being tipped off by police.

The croc was trapped on Wednesday after traps baited with a pig carcass were set on August 14.
The elderly animal has no teeth left. DES wildlife experts suggest the animal is around 70 years old.
A DES spokeswoman said due to its large size (greater than 4m), the crocodile would be dealt with as an “icon crocodile” under Queensland’s conservation laws.
“The animal can only be placed with a registered crocodile farm or zoo which agrees to use it for educational purposes about crocodile conservation,” the spokeswoman said.
“The placement of an icon crocodile must also be done in consultation with the relevant Traditional Owners.
“The department will work in partnership with Traditional Owners to select a suitable facility for the crocodile.”
The croc is being held at a DES wildlife facility in Cairns while arrangements are made to accommodate and present the crocodile in accordance with its icon status.
Members of the public are encouraged to report crocodile sightings as soon as possible, by calling 1300 130 372. DES investigates all reports it receives.
Babinda is known croc country and people in the area are reminded to always be Crocwise.
