ANZ customers fuming after brief card services crash

A brief outage of ANZ’s card services this morning left many stranded at the checkout with their transactions declining.

A brief outage of ANZ’s card services this morning left many stranded at the checkout, with their transactions declining and customers unable to pay their bills.

While the issue was swiftly rectified, customers were furious, with dozens taking to Twitter to report that their cards declined while trying to make purchases.

One man claimed that his card was “cut in half at a cafe”.

“Your site reports no issues, Twitter reports no issues downdetector reports thousands of issues. Would be helpful if you at least acknowledged your card payment network is down so I could prove im (sic) not trying to scam a free coffee,” he added.

“OK great so ANZ is down and I can’t buy a damn coffee,” one person wrote.

“Hey @ANZAU, what’s going on with your system? I just tried to pay for a mocha but apparently there’s been issues with card payment this morning, and Down Detector has a massive spike of complaints against your system this morning,” another user tweeted.

“@ANZAU thanks for having Eft services down. Appreciate not being able to purchase breakfast this morning,” a third person complained.

“What’s going on with your card system? It’s down and can’t pay for anything plus no one’s picking up the phone,” said another.

“@ANZAU my card is being declined and I have money in my account,” wrote one woman.

Customers began experiencing issues with their ANZ bank cards around 7.30am, according to outage monitoring website DownDetector. Nearly 1000 customers have since taken to the site to report their issues.

An ANZ representative said the bank was aware of a “card declining issue”.

“I can confirm that there was an issue with cards declining this morning. This issue is now resolved, and you should be able to complete card transactions,” a representative responded to one person’s tweet.

“Please let us know if you have any further issues.”
