Police believe a car exploded in a southern Sydney beach car park after the 63-year-old driver lit a gas bottle in the vehicle in a self-harm attempt.

A car exploded in a suicide attempt at the car park of a beach in Sydney’s south, causing traffic chaos on Saturday morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene in South Maroubra to find the shell of a burning vehicle and a 63-year-old man who miraculously only had minor injuries.

The driver attempted to light a gas bottle in the car and was rushed to St Vincent’s Hospital for assessment.

The incident was a self-harm incident. Police are currently investigating.

A post by Randwick City Council on Facebook said the car park would likely remain closed for all of Saturday.

“South Maroubra Beach car park is currently closed following a car explosion early this morning and is likely to remain closed for most of today,” the council post said.

“Council is supporting police while they investigate the tragic incident.

“Our thoughts and best wishes are with the person and their family for a full recovery.”

The car was completely destroyed and neighbouring residents wrote on Facebook about hearing the explosion.
