The mother of Hollywood A-lister Margot Robbie has revealed she always thought her kids - including her Academy Award-nominated daughter - would go to university or get a trade.

In a rare interview, Gold Coast-based Sarie Kessler opened up on being a mother and hopes and dreams for her offspring, saying she never anticipated them going big in the film industry.

“No, as a mum I just thought they’d all just go to university or have a trade, I didn’t think any of them would end up in the acting industry, the film and television industry, no.”

Robbie, who was born in Dalby but grew up on the Gold Coast as the second youngest of four, rocketed from Neighbours to starring with Leonardo DiCaprio, Will Smith and Brad Pitt in blockbusters including The Wolf of Wall Street, Focus and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. She was nominated for an Academy Award for her role in I, Tonya which she also produced.

Robbie’s younger brother Cameron also acts whilst older brother Lachlan is a stunt performer whose credits include Aquaman and Birds of Prey.

Ms Kessler, a recently retired physiotherapist was a guest speaker at a Trinity Lutheran College fundraiser on Saturday at Palazzo Versace, focusing on being a working mother.

Asked what was most important when thinking of her kids’ lives, she said: “As a mum, watching my children grow and develop - first of all that they’re happy, in what they’re doing, that they are able to maintain their own integrity, and strength of character as they progress in whatever, whatever they do.

“I’ll support them in whatever they do and whoever they choose to become in their passion for whatever work they do.

“I would definitely promote being self-assured, honest and caring, compassionate - caring for others. We have so many people in the world who have so little. We are so privileged.”

Since retiring she said she now had much more time to spend with her kids.

“My daughter (Anya) lives next door with my son-in-law and my grandson, so I’m able to support them quite a lot, I love it, being grandma to Sebastian, he’s 15. I enjoy that very much.

“My eldest son (Lachlan) is out west so I go out and see him occasionally He was a stuntman. He would love to continue doing the stunt work.

“My youngest son (Cameron) is acting and presenting. He’s a very busy man but usually away so I don’t see a lot of him - but we talk on the phone. My daughter Margot, she’s an extremely busy young woman and I get to see her if I can go and visit but that’s about it.”

Sarie Kessler, the mother of Margot Robbie, says in a rare interview about three of her four kids working in the film industry: “As a mum I just thought they’d all just go to university or have a trade, I didn’t think any of them would end up in the acting industry, the film and television industry, no.” Picture: Celeste Humphrey
