Model and surfer Ellie-Jean Coffey has hit back at an author who asked if she was interested in a three-way relationship, saying coming out as bisexual was hard enough without people ‘automatically assuming you sleep with couples’.

Surfer and model Ellie-Jean Coffey has said her bisexuality was the reason she was asked about whether she would consider threesomes now she is single.

The 24-year-old took to Instagram to give her take on The Daily Telegraph’s article, which detailed an interview between her and surf writer Derek Rielly about her newly single status.

Author Rielly, who wrote former prime minister Bob Hawke’s best-selling biography, courted controversy online by asking Ms Coffey if she would be interested in a three-way relationship.

Rielly, who is more than twice Coffey’s age, asked if she would be getting “adventurous” now she was single and if she’d consider being in a “throuple” — a threesome couple.

Coffey, who came out as bisexual in May, said she was sick of bisexuality being stereotyped.

“What sucks about ‘coming out’ as bisexual is that people automatically assume you have massive orgies and sleep with couples (and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that). It’s just such a stereotype,” she wrote to her million followers.

“A bit of respect goes a long way and I would appreciate it if everyone just realised I am still quite young and most of you are fantastic about it but for other bisexual girls the need to instantly sexualise them is not cool.

“It’s a big deal to come out and for the first question to be something like ‘oh so you f — k other couples’ is a little insensitive, something along the lines of ‘hey we support you and appreciate who you are’ is the kind of response that is so needed.”

Rielly’s article on his surf website BeachGrit stated that MsCoffey had been cheated on by her boyfriend of 18 months, after she announced it on social media.

He called Coffey, who is known for her cheeky Instagram page as well as her surfing, and asked her a series of questions about her breakup to which she reluctantly responded.

The writer, who is in his 50s, then asked if she was open to swinging as a “throuple” — a relationship of three people.

He has not taken down the article or admitted any wrongdoing.

The article left Coffey open to a slew of vulgar and derogatory comments from readers of the website, which were deleted shortly after Confidential contacted Rielly.

The comments were so vile that they will not be repeated in this column.

In November 2017, Rielly released Wednesdays With Bob, a biography he wrote with and about late former Prime Minister Bob Hawke.

The chronicle of the widely adored PM’s life was a critically acclaimed bestseller and was named as the best political biography and in 2018 was Dymock’s top-selling political biography.

Rielly admitted he wrote the story purely for web page traffic.

“By any stretch, it’s hardly news. But it’s enough for you to email me and me to call EJ.”

He said because Coffey was “brave” and he felt comfortable asking her personal and sexual questions.

“Because she’s a brave revolutionary who isn’t afraid of subverting the strict morality imposed on public figures,” he said.

However Coffey said she was disgusted by the questions and that she was ambushed by the interview.

“I think it’s entirely disgusting, it’s an outrage,” she told Confidential.

“It’s 2019 and we should get a grip that this is not acceptable behaviour.

“I was getting on a bus, I had a really busy day, the bus was crowded and I got ambushed.

“I get a phone call and boom.”
