The Miles Labor government has announced a new $15 million skills and training centre will be built in Townsville, if they are re-elected in October’s election.

The Townsville’s Plumbing Industry Climate Action Centre would train apprentices and workers in specialist plumbing, fire protection, airconditioning and mechanical training.

Under Labor’s Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan and Queensland’s Clean Energy Workforce Roadmap initiatives, the centre would deliver training from pre-apprenticeship level to full Certificate III, IV and post-trade courses.

A partnership between the Plumbing and Pipe Trades Employees Union, Master Plumbers and Mechanical Services Association of Australia, Master Plumbers Association of Queensland, National Fire Industry Association of Australia, and the airconditioning and Mechanical Contractors Association, the centre would be a first for regional north Queensland.

The Townsville centre would join a network of 6 campuses across Australia’s east coast including an existing facility in Beenleigh, Brisbane.

At present, aspiring tradies looking to skill up have to travel from the north of the state to the south in order to make use of the facility’s available there.

Member for Townsville and Resources and Critical Minerals Minister Scott Stewart said the region was on track to have the third fastest growth in jobs in all of the state.

“The training services at this new facility will not only deliver the training required for North Queensland’s green hydrogen future but will also complement skills needed for our critical minerals mining and processing projects,” he said.

“ … it’s investments like this that will help local people take advantage of this golden decade of opportunity.”

Thuringowa MP Aaron Harper said the centre would be an investment into the future of young people in the region.

“Townsville’s clean energy industry is booming, this new facility will not only create about 40 full time jobs worth of work in construction but will train hundreds of local apprentices and workers for our blue collar industries,” he said.

Mundingburra MP Les Walker said Townsville’s green hydrogen industry is one of the biggest jobs, climate and economic opportunities.

“We are making sure we have the right people and skills in place at the right time, so that industries like green hydrogen can develop and excel, and communities like Townsville are ready to support them as they grow.”
