MagMedic unveils its new Idalia workshop, the only alloy wheel repairer in Townsville

The only specialised alloy wheel repairer in town, MagMedic has unveiled its new workshop after investing thousands in renovations. See where it is.

If you were unlucky enough to hit a pothole and damage an alloy wheel, surprisingly there is only one place in Townsville with the expertise and equipment to get you repaired and back on the road without buying a replacement.

A family-owned and run business, MagMedic is North Queensland’s number one alloy wheel repair specialist, specialising in cosmetic and straightening repairs, along with custom colour changes to alloy wheels.

The business was founded in 2014 as a mobile business by Jordan and Jannine Williams, after they migrated from England a year earlier.

While qualified in car body repair, Mr Williams initially took up interim work as a detailer at Carmichael Ford, where he noticed somebody repairing wheels out of a van and thought he could do a better job.

Realising that it was better to have a space where you could take the wheels off cars, and use specialised equipment like CNC machines to reset the face of the wheel, they established a workshop.

They relocated several times over the next decade before finding the ideal property at 10 Gorari St, Idalia, with help from Colliers sales and leasing executive Aaron Power.

Described as the “backbone of MagMedic”, Mrs Williams said they did a lot of work for panel beaters around Townsville when there was wheel damage involved, along with jobs for insurance companies and car dealerships.

“We don’t just service Townsville … people send wheels to us … we service Cairns, Mount Isa, Rockhampton, and Mackay.

“We get a lot of retail customers who Google wheel repair and then find us.

“We also do a lot of colour changes to people, like when they have silver wheels and they want to change the look to have black wheels.”

After purchasing the aged Idalia workshop for $540,000 in June, the couple embarked on an ambitious renovation process, investing an estimated $150,000 to replace the roof and boost floorspace for the workshop.

She was keen to get Mr Power to carry out an appraisal to see how its value had improved.

Following the off-market transaction, Mr Power was impressed by the workshop’s transformation, especially its metal-cladded exterior.

“Magmedic have moved out of a property in Garbutt that was part of a strata complex into their own freehold property that is a lot closer to home, (saving a) drive across to the other side of town everyday to get to their business,” Mr Power said.

“It was a decent lot of land (911 sqm) and the shed had good bones. They’re a real niche business and they’ve got a great product.”
