A popular Top End swimming spot has reopened after high levels of bacteria were detected in its waters more than a month ago.
East Point’s Lake Alexander, which closed on January 10, reopened for swimming and recreational water activities Wednesday evening, following frequent water quality monitoring throughout January and February.
Lake Alexander is a popular location for recreational activities both in the water and on the shore located in the East Point Reserve.
Darwin Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said the results of the water quality tests showed the lake met the NT Recreational Water Quality Guidelines, making it suitable for swimming.
“We are pleased to re-open Lake Alexander to the public,” he said.
“We will continue to monitor the water quality and will undertake regular sampling to ensure the appropriate levels required for swimming are met.”
The lake closed a number of times in 2024 due to possible shark sightings and high levels of bacteria.
