An adolescent mental health nurse and a Mareeba midwife has been named as the nurse of the year across Far North Queensland.

Jane Roberts, a clinical nurse in the Child and Youth Mental Health Services Adolescent Inpatient Unit at Cairns Hospital, took out the top honour for the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service recently.

CHHHS said Ms Roberts was often referred to as “the kind nurse” by patients and takes a trauma-informed approach to patient care.

“We deal with a lot of curveballs and challenges most days and it’s about being present with the person, about being able to share that space … from a trauma-informed lens and … assisting them to feel grounded and safe and contained,” Ms Roberts said.

Ms Roberts said she knew she wanted to do a job that involved caring for others since she was a little girl.

She said while she originally didn’t picture herself as a nurse, she was grateful for her position.

“I’m just so grateful … that I’m able to help the people that are the most vulnerable in our society,” Ms Roberts said.

“It’s a very humbling experience – it’s a privilege to be in that space and to share that space with them.”

Midwife of the year Leanne Kelly works as a registered midwife in the maternity and paediatrics unit at Mareeba Hospital.

The CHHHS said Ms Kelly was known for her leadership at the hospital, where she introduced “innovative” ‘Mat Chat’ educational videos for staff.

Ms Kelly said she enjoyed working with her team most.

“I work in an exceptional team. We all look out for each other and we all look out for the women in our care,” she said.

“The community itself is pretty diverse and I think that brings its challenges, but it’s also a real honour to look after the women and serve them with all different backgrounds.”

Ms Kelly also said as a midwife in a regional community, she enjoyed the connection she maintained with women she had looked after.

“It’s … really special to look after women having their baby, and then seeing them in the community as their children grow,” she said.
