The country’s top domestic run scorer is going back to his roots as he suits up for his junior club in the winter break.
Darwin’s Jake Weatherald is joining the Darwin Eagles CC this weekend in the Darwin and Districts Cricket Competition in the NT.
The star bat is fresh off his 906-run season with the Tasmanian Tigers, which included three tons and a strike rate of 68.27, and earned him the Ricky Ponting Medal and a three-year extension.
He is now looking to bring that strong form to the fields of Darwin for the Eagles.
President of the DCC Cameron McNally said the inclusion of Weatherald was huge for the club and could not be understated.
“We are super pumped to have him back,” McNally said.
“He’s back in town tonight (Friday) and will run out for us tomorrow (Saturday) for match day.
“He reached out to us and said that he was interested in coming up and playing for us, so we think he’s going to be part of our team for the next few months.”
Part of the NT’s golden generation which included the likes of Tom Andrews and D’Arcy Short, the left-handed run machine will be injected straight into top of the order.
“I believe we’re going to put him atop the order with Dicko (Jacob Dickman, captain),” McNally said.
“Dicko has been on a tear this season so far so to chuck in someone as explosive as Jake, we might have to warn spectators to park their cars a few streets over.”
McNally also said the inclusion of the 30-year-old provided a huge confidence boost for all the locals and juniors who could see, in the flesh, a player who made it from Darwin.
“He’s part of the NT’s golden generation of cricketers, so to have him come and play back in the local league is immense,” McNally said.
“Especially for all the juniors who can see that his journey started in Darwin, and that he was in their position 15 years ago.”
The Eagles will play Southern Districts at 11am in Round 6 of the One-Day competition at Gerrywood Oval, Saturday 10. May.
