A man who suffered appalling injuries when he was savaged by two pig dogs has recounted gruesome details about the horror attack, saying he is only alive because of his “hero” son.
Brett Grant was so badly injured in the attack at the Ingham Showgrounds on Saturday that he was immediately rushed to Townsville University Hospital before undergoing three hours of surgery on Monday.
“I got multiple bites to the legs before I finally went down,” Mr Grant said of the attack.
“(Then) they started going for the neck, so I used my hand to cover my throat.”
Wife Jennifene, at her husband’s hospital bedside on Wednesday, said she and son Dalton, 24, were finishing cleaning out the flood-damaged poultry-pen at the Showgrounds about 1.30pm.
She said a white ute arrived, unloading a pack of six dogs, including two that resembled “big pit bulls”.
Ms Grant said that after growing concerned and attempting to chase the dogs away, she called her husband who was nearby with Show President Wayne Forden.
“I rang Brett and that’s when it all went pear-shaped,” she said.
Mr Grant said when Mr Forden asked the man if the dogs were his, “they just started going for us”.
“Wayne jumped in the car and I was going around the other side but by the time I got to the bull bar, it was too late.”
He said the dog owner had managed to control one of the animals, but the second continued to go for his throat.
“By that time my hero son came running over ... this dog now had me on the rear end … I couldn’t do anything to get this dog off me, it wouldn’t stop,” he said.
“He just kept on punching it and punching it, putting his life in danger, until this dog released and I was able to get up and we both got in the ute.
“He did get a bite on the hand, but if it wasn’t for him it would not have stopped.”
Mrs Grant said she was treated for shock at Ingham Hospital due to the savagery of the attack.
Mr Grant, who remained in hospital on Wednesday, said his injuries were extensive, including multiple bites to the shins, lower and upper legs, knee-joint, buttocks and upper right arm from protecting his throat and face.
“I was under (in surgery) for about three hours because with dog bites they had to reopen (all the wounds) to clean and wash everything thoroughly.”
He said he was speaking out to warn others about the dangers posed by dogs, particularly at the Showgrounds that was home to the popular local junior gymnastics club.
“I just want to let people know that there is a danger, I am worried about kids being up there … just to make people aware that not all dogs are friendly.”
Hinchinbrook Mayor Ramon Jayo confirmed that the dogs had been seized while an investigation and legal process was underway.
