There was a sea of rainbow colours and flags at The Strand on Sunday morning as the second annual Gurambilbarra Townsville Pride Fair Day was held.
Despite a few drops of rain and some grey clouds to start the day, the sun came out as the colourful fair day kicked off at Brigadier North Park with community stalls, food and entertainment.
Having performed in drag since the age of 16, Nadia Rebelle said the event was to show pride exists in the regions.
“It’s a really important event to spread unity and diversity.”
“I performed here last year too and it’s grown so much, it’s getting bigger and better every year which is really beautiful to see.”
Ben Dawson from the Queensland Council for LGBTI Health said the event was important to show visibility for LGBTI people and highlighted the importance of connecting the community with groups such as headspace for mental health support and 2 Spirits, which caters to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
“We know that being yourself can only be a good thing for people’s confidence, health and wellbeing,” he said.
“As much as having beautiful rainbow stalls it’s important that we have services here that people may not know are available to them.”
