It’s the kind of trust you only gain after performing together for 16 years: ‘Strong man’ Desko Amat hangs mid-air while his teeth hold aerial extraordinaire Nini Storm as she dangles by her hair.
The Spanish couple are part of Zirque La La, a show that combines circus and cabaret, kicking off at Pink Flamingo this weekend.
“We train for four or five hours in the gym every day, working on our skills and flexibility, trying new tricks,” Mr Amat said.
“We need to stay focused on our skills, so it’s perfect when we do it on stage.”
The pair met in school and began working together two years later, with Mr Amat starting as a juggler at just 18-years-old.
This show is their third contract performing alongside one another.
The duo’s unique talents have taken them across the world, performing in Europe and Asia, but the stunts took a long time to develop.
“The best part of the act is the final trick, the mouth and hair hanging, because it’s a really strong one,” Mr Amat said.
“I think it’s the most important trick for my character.
“I said to Nini, for a lot of years, ‘you can do it’, because she has really strong hair.
“We tried and tried until, one day, she got it at training and voila! Now we’re here with this wonderful, amazing act.”
Those sturdy locks are thanks to her Spanish heritage and the great care she takes in looking after her hair.
“It’s 40 per cent genetics, and the rest is good food, lots of rest, training, and good hair care,” Ms Storm explained.
Mr Amat said the show requires a great deal of faith in your fellow performers, likening it to a spider web with all parties interconnected.
“I trust Nini and she trusts me,” he said.
“When you work on stage, you need to trust the people around you all the time – not only the acrobats, but the dancers and the emcee.
“We’re all one team.”
The duo feel right at home inside the intimate Pink Flamingo.
“The people, the place, the audience, the staff – it’s not just another dinner show,” Ms Storm said.
“We’ve worked in a lot of places, but here in Australia it’s different, it’s another energy.
“We’re a big family, it’s really amazing, and the best part is how you feel when you come to the venue.”
The couple are looking forward to spending a full year on the Gold Coast, describing the experience as a dream come true.
“We are really happy here, I hope everyone comes to see the show,” Mr Amat said.
