Ho, ho, ho, it’s going to be hot, hot, hot on Monday, with forecasters predicting temperatures will take a welcome upward turn on time for Christmas lunch.
The Gold Coast saw grey skies and below average temperatures on Friday, but although some showers are likely, hopes are high better conditions could follow in the wake of Santa’s sleigh.
“It will be getting a bit warmer towards Christmas Day,” Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Daniel Hayes said.
“The temperatures over the weekend will be getting back towards average.
“It was fairly cool across the Gold Coast on Friday, but it will be warming up to around 27, 28 through the weekend. And on Monday it will be up to around 32 degrees, so it will be a fairly warm one.”
That will be well up on last year, when the mercury did not stretch far beyond 25 degrees at The Seaway.
There is still good news for gardeners though, with the Gold Coast is highly likely to see some more rain over the weekend.
The highest rainfall is expected on Sunday, with less rain predicted for Christmas Day.
“Sunday though we’re looking at another upper level trough that will come through,” Mr Hayes said.
“As that upper level system comes through we’ll see another round of enhanced shower and thunderstorm activity, which should come through as far as the Gold Coast again. So at that point we see the likelihood of showers picking up to 80 or 90 per cent for Sunday.
“And the amounts that we might see out of those are in the 10 to 15 mm range for showers.
If there are thunderstorms then you could get more.”
Mr Hayes said the showers were likely to continue into Monday, but not to the same extent.
“Some sort of shower activity (on Christmas Day) is pretty likely for most people,” he said.
