REVELLERS could be in for a soggy New Year’s Eve on the Gold Coast – wet weather is due to drench the city until at least early next week.
Some parts of southeast Queensland were expected to receive more than 125 millimetres of rain in the 72 hours to New Year’s Day, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).
However, the Coast was expected to dodge the worst of it.
WHERE TO WATCH FIREWORKS ON GOLD COAST
Between 6-45mm of rain has been forecast on New Year’s Eve, while 5-10mm is predicted for New Year’s Day.
BOM meteorologist Helen Reid said about the weather over New Year’s Eve: “At this stage, it’s predominantly just rain.”
“There will be cool temperatures but still a big humid.
“It won’t be great for the fireworks.”
It’s expected day trips to the Gold Coast hinterland and locations like Springbrook’s Purling Brook Falls will be fairly popular on New Year’s Day, even with the forecast showers.
BOM meteorologist Helen Kirkup said the hinterland’s natural springs would be flowing well, but she urged the public to be cautious while traversing slippery surfaces.
“The wind conditions will be fairly gusty down on the coastline with winds of up to 30km/hr – so heading inland for the day could be a good option,” she said.
“There is plenty of water flowing over the various falls across the Gold Coast with all the rain we’ve had lately.”
The BOM is predicting an 80 per cent chance of showers for New Year’s Day with a top temperature of 27 degrees.
Showers were foreast every day until Monday, with winds of between 20-35kmh and temperatures hovering between 19-28C.
In the 24 hours to 9am on Tuesday, Gold Coast Seaway recorded 92mm of rain, while Coolangatta in the south was soaked by 52mm.
Tamborine Mountain to the west in the hinterland received just 6mm, while Steiglitz in the north recorded 38mm.
