A tinny has capsized and three people were thrown into the water near the mouth of the Tweed River on Wednesday.
A New South Wales Police spokesman confirmed a boat – believed to be a tinny – had capsized off Fingal Head about 1.10pm and the trio had managed to get themselves to dry land.
The incident sparked the involvement of water police and the Queensland-based Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter.
WLRH senior air crewman Paul Brennan said the helicopter had originally been tasked to attend a job to assist two kayakers off North Stradbroke Island’s southern tip – who were found to be safe on a beach – when the call came through for the Tweed River job.
Mr Brennan said they winched a crew member down to the Duranbah Seawall to talk to the three occupants of the tinny, who had “self-recovered”.
He said the tinny was being towed in by Marine Rescue Point Danger.
The NSW Police spokesman said no one was injured in the incident.
