THE art of drag is sweeping the Gold Coast with more and more venues adding the cross-dressing cabaret genre to their entertainment line-up.
Before its unfortunate closure, Escape Bar and Nightclub featured regular drag performances but now venues including The Avenue’s Dragalicious every Thursday, Miami Marketta’s monthly bingo and one-off shows at The Island and NightQuarter.
Drag performer of six years Justine Kace says people are still learning about what drag really is, but says the scene is definitely ramping up.
“A huge misconception would be that drag queens are transgender that it’s a gender or sexual orientation as opposed to an art form.
“She’s a character, she’s a performer like any other character.”

Weekly hostess of The Avenue’s Dragalicious, The Three Legged Beauty Natasha St James, says there are a few sure-fire ways you can make your drag queen happy.
“Drag queens love photos, particularly with flash, but always be polite when asking for a photo,” she said.
“Remember to never touch a drag queen’s makeup or hair! It takes about two hours to completely go from man to fabulous!
“Make sure your drag queens can hear you when you watch a show — the more excited and fun you have — the better we perform.
“Drag queens love being bought drinks at the bar, and maybe even throw some cash at your local queens! We love tips.
“Remember if you want to start drag you’ll definitely need to buy some duct tape …”
Both Natasha and Justine recommended to not just a drag queen until you’ve seen a show.
“We have such a mix of people coming to our shows, but everyone always has a fun time,” Justine said.
