Federal Election 2022: Ultimate guide to Federal seats and their candidates on the Gold Coast

Wondering who to vote for at the Federal Election? Here’s our complete guide to who is running where on the Gold Coast – and what they have to say.

Election 2022: Highlights from the first leaders’ debate

The Bulletin has asked Federal Election candidates on the Gold Coast a series of questions.

We asked why they are running, where their experience lies and what they see as the most important issues in their electorates.

FADDEN

STEWART BROOKER

Stewart Brooker, Independent candidate for Fadden.
Stewart Brooker, Independent candidate for Fadden.

Electorate: Fadden

Party: Independent

What suburb do you live in?

Coomera

Why are you running?

The aim of the team on this campaign is to move from party-based politics to community-based representation. This is what we are hearing from the community that they want, and the only way to achieve that is to have more independents running. So here I am.

What political experience do you have?

No formal experience, apart from helping a few candidates in the past that were underdogs in elections. Not a fan of career politicians. After all, democracy was originally made up of people from the community representing the community and we need to get back to that. People tend to make better decisions if they know that at the end of their term, they must go back to living with the policies they implemented.

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

Trained in root cause analysis and how to motivate teams to give best outcomes for not only company, staff but also for customer experience. Applied this training to my roles in IT where I managed teams of up to 100 people working for some of the biggest names globally, with project budgets around $20 Million.

I managed teams ranging from support front line staff to experts in development, organisational change management and customer service across projects with budgets in the millions. My roles saw me dealing with people from frontline customer service centres, across CEOs through to Commissioners in Government departments.

In my personal life I have had an active volunteer involvement in community radio, community gardens and compost system programs. I also managed a PCYC for 6 months and was their events manager for fundraising before that for 3 months.

For 12 months in Canberra, I was involved in a community radio project mentoring young people from a media program at a local school showing them how to conduct a radio program weekly. The programs ranged from Heavy Metal to one called controversial corner, where they were allowed to pick a topic and I had to debate the opposite opinion, no matter what it was. We did this to teach critical thinking. This went out live and they loved trying to stump me.

The current community projects I am working on are making compost for Peachey Community Garden (Ormeau), conducting food waste pickups for Seed the Ground (Helensvale Hub) and Labrador Community Garden where I process their excess food waste.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

Cost of Living

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament?

ICAC as we are wasting a lot of taxpayers’ money, the current federal system is geared towards and encourages MPs to spend money where it will win the most votes and not where it is needed most. If we solve that, and as a result change MP’s mindset, we will see a lot more core issues resolved which will benefit everyone nationally. In my experience all processes need to be transparent, hold people to account, focus on the end customer(society) and be cost effective.

Team will also implement a Community Advisory Board within Fadden and meet on a monthly basis to discuss issues. We will also implement a website to communicate policies up for discussion and voting and allow community to vote on issues and suggest amendments. We have already been talking to local Progress associations about this concept and been assisting some suburbs to get community meetings up and running. We will also engage both local and state MP’s to be part of this process to make sure we capture their issues and provide federal support to get them resolved.

Current high priority items we need to get funded is the PCYC for Pimpama $6.5 Million which the community has been asking for since 2012.

Matching the $11 Millions dollars put up by GCCC Council for more bus services which has been on the table with state government for 12 months with no action.

LETITIA DEL FABBRO

Electorate: Fadden

Party: Labor

What suburb do you live in?

Parkwood, a community that I know and love, where I am raising my three kids who attend the local schools and enjoy the Gold Coast lifestyle.

Why are you running?

I believe that politicians should be in touch with their community and that politicians should be trustworthy and demonstrate integrity.

I am up for this challenge and I believe that I am the best person to do this job, that’s why I’m running.

What political experience do you have?

I have experience working effectively with all levels of government through my career, including in health and social care, higher education, transnational business partnerships, and community development. I have appeared in parliament as an expert on health and aged care legislation and policy.

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

I have been a Registered Nurse for 28 years. I returned to the Gold Coast in 2007 to take up the role of Director of International Programs at Griffith University School of Nursing. I continue to work at Griffith University and have also worked with Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service. I have extensive leadership experience in health, education, international relations and complex project management.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

I am hearing from voters that they are concerned about the rising costs of living, including the rising costs of medications, the rising costs of seeing a GP, the cost of childcare and the rising costs of rent. Scott Morrison fails to plan, blames others and goes missing in action when our community needed leadership most. Only Labor has a plan to tackle these issues and to build a better future for our community.

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament?

My priority is to deliver for the people of the central and northern Gold Coast, to be a trustworthy politician and to demonstrate integrity in my work for my community and for the Federal parliament.

NATHAN O’BRIEN

Nathan O'Brien, United Australia Party candidate for Fadden.
Nathan O'Brien, United Australia Party candidate for Fadden.

Electorate: Fadden

Party: United Australia Party

What suburb do you live in?

Coomera

Why are you running?

The very soul of our Nation is under attack. I want to hand my Children a free and democratic Country. I love our Country and our people. We are a resource rich Nation and I believe our most valuable resource are our people. Our current Government have sold-us-out, lied-to us and have arguably brought Australia to its knees. We need a Government who defends, believes and invests into it’s people. We must not allow foreign interests to determine the future of our Country. We need a government who makes decisions in the best interest of our Nation. Political Correctness & Virtue-Signalling is destroying our potential and the prosperity of the next generation. We must Save Australia.

What political experience do you have?

I have no formal political experience, but have been exposed to our political processes from time-to-time. The last thing Fadden needs right now is another politician. I was first captivated by the electoral process as a young boy & would do letterbox drops to support State and Federal candidates. I remember watching the TV on election night, observing the count - feeling as if my efforts actually made a difference. When these candidates won, formed Government & careers progressed - I realised that this really is the lucky country and every Australian can make a difference!

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

I am blessed to have worked with and have been mentored by some of Australia’s foremost thought leaders. I’ve always been in the “people” business, having served in franchising, real estate & logistics. A professional highlight was when I managed a region that transacted in excess of $4.5 Billion in property annually, serviced over 250 offices and drove profitable growth. I have been a founding Board Member of an International Foundation and I also understand the vicissitudes of small business.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

The rising cost of living. Liberal and Labor have run-up over $1 Trillion debt (for our health), but not built one new hospital. We don’t have a climate emergency, we have an economic crisis and it’s on our shores. Left unaddressed, every Australian will be affected by skyrocketing inflation & out-of-control interest rates. This wealth transfer (debt) will be at the cost of health care, aged care, child care, education and infrastructure. Current modelling indicates that 80% of mortgage holders will default on their mortgages when interest rates hit 6%. We want to Save Australia & homeownership.

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament?

1. Introduce a Bill of Rights - to protect our freedom and end mandates.

2. Cap Home Loan rates below 3% for 5 Years, to save Australian home ownership.

3. Introduce a 15% Export License on all Iron Ore - to ensure our Trading Partners retire our debt, not Australians.

4. Abolish HECS Debt & INCREASE the Aged Pension by $180 per fortnight

5. Provide $40 billion additional funding for hospitals and healthcare across Australia

SANDY ROACH

Electorate: Fadden

Party: One Nation

What suburb do you live in?

Oxenford.

Why are you running?

To Stop Government Overreach

What political experience do you have?

I have always taken an interest in politics but have no previous experience, although raising four children could count!

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

I am a wife and mum, I have worked in the finance industry for over 40 years, have volunteered at the local Soccer club in Fadden, competed in a couple of endurance events, Marathon and True Grit and travelled overseas for 18 months

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

Removal of Mandates so Nurses, Teachers etc can go back to work, Restore Freedom of Choice, Illicit Drug Use, Roads, Mental Health, cost of living and our economy due to businesses/tourism being closed for the past two years.

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament?

On entering the new parliament my priorities would be the above and to help small business get back on their feet after the last two years.

STUART ROBERT

Electorate: Fadden (incumbent)

Party: LNP

What suburb do you live in?

Nerang

Why are you running?

To be a passionate advocate for the northern Gold Coast in Canberra, working hard to influence the decisions affecting local residents in the community, with a particular focus on increasing workforce participation for women, ensuring there is an environment for small and family business to thrive, and building a care workforce to support our veterans, our childcare centres, provide services for people with a disability and our aged care sector.

What political experience do you have?

I have been the Northern GC’s (Fadden) representative in Canberra since 2007. Since then, I have served our community and all Australians as a Minister, including right now as Minister for Employment, Workforce, Skills, Small and Family Business, where I am working to continue Australia’s economic recovery through protecting jobs, connecting Australians with work and building a workforce with the right skill set to secure our future prosperity.

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

Prior to running for Parliament, I served in the Army for 12 years in Infantry and Intelligence Corps units including deploying operationally to Bougainville in 1998 as part of the Peace Monitoring Force. While serving in the Army, I completed a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and Masters degrees in both Business Administration and Information Technology. In 2000 I left the Army and, together with a colleague, founded an IT services firm that rapidly expanded to become a nationwide business. This business was twice named one of Australia’s fastest growing businesses in the Business Review Weekly Fast 100 list.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

Reducing the cost of living for everyone across the Gold Coast - families, pensioners, small business - not just petrol, but everything along the supply chain that relies on transport, such as groceries. A close second is infrastructure - getting Gold Coast residents to and from home safely and quickly as they go about their lives.

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament?

Building a strong economy through jobs, particularly through small business, so we can afford to pay for the things we rely on such as healthcare, pensions and infrastructure.

SALLY SPAIN

Sally Spain. Picture: Tertius Pickard

Electorate: Fadden

Party: Queensland Greens

What suburb do you live in?

Maudsland

Why are you running?

I’m running because I’m passionate about protecting our precious places and improving everyone’s quality of life. I believe it’s time to build our economy on long-term sustainability and science principles, not short-term self-interest and political point-scoring.

What political experience do you have?

I’ve been a member and volunteer with the Greens since the late 1990s. Since then, I’ve been a candidate for the Greens on the Gold Coast at 7 state elections and 4 federal elections and have campaigned consistently on local, state and federal issues of community concern, particularly environmental issues, outside of elections.

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

I’m a former teacher and dedicated mother and grandmother with a long history campaigning to preserve Australia’s vanishing natural heritage and protect animal rights, including here on the Gold Coast Hinterland where I grew up.

I was the president of the Coomera Valley Residents Association and have volunteered with Citizens for Democracy, Local Pre-School Parents Support Group and Coomera Girl Guides Support Group. I’ve also served on the committee of the Gold Coast and Hinterland Environmental Council, as a delegate to the Gold Coast City Council Environmental Advisory Committee, and on the state council of Wildlife Queensland.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

We are in a global race against time on climate change. We’re already seeing more frequent and severe extreme weather events like bushfires and floods. Coal and gas are driving this crisis, yet Labor and the LNP want more of both.

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament?

The last time the Greens shared power in parliament, we secured free dental care for kids and supported world leading climate legislation which reduced Australia’s carbon emissions. This time, we’ll push the next government to end coal and gas and reach 100% publicly owned renewables by 2030. With a massive green energy surplus, we can electrify the rest of our economy and grow local energy-intensive manufacturing sectors like green steel and aluminium.

BERT VAN MANEN

Electorate: Forde (incumbent)

Party: LNP

Why are you running?

I am running for re-election because I want the best for my community. I have lived in this area for almost my entire life, more than half a century, and I am proud to call it my home. My friends and family also live in Logan and the northern Gold Coast. Since being elected as the member for Forde in 2010, I have worked tirelessly to bring improvements to our roads, rail services, community and sports facilities, and so much more. But I still have many projects that I am working on and wish to see through to completion.

What political experience do you have?

I have held the seat of Forde since 2010, being re-elected in 2013, 2016 and 2019.

I currently hold the position of Chief Government Whip.

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

Before entering politics, I had a 30 year career in banking and finance, including running my own financial planning service.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

There are many issues that have been raised with me during the election campaign, but the number one concern is the rising cost of living. Obviously, many of the factors causing prices to rise are out of our control, such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine and supply-chain issues. To try to ease price pain the Federal Government slashed the fuel excise in half to 22 cents a litre in the recent Budget, as well as introducing one-of-payments and additional tax relief for some social security recipients and low to middle income earners. All of this comes on top of our assistance for first homebuyers and single parents, tax relief initiatives and childcare support.

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament

If re-elected, my number one priority will be delivering on the promises I have made to the local community and ensuring the projects that I have for Logan and the northern Gold Coast become a reality.

JORDAN HALL

Electorate: Forde

Party: Queensland Greens

What suburb do you live in?

Greenbank

Why are you running?

I’m running because I’m passionate about the well-being of people and our planet, and I believe that everybody deserves a fair go and a decent life. We need a change now to protect the futures of young people and future generations.

What political experience do you have?

This is my first time running as a political candidate, but I’ve been volunteering with the Greens since late 2020. As a young person I’m worried about the future, and I think we need fresh representation in Parliament.

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

I’m a proud Western Wakka Wakka man who has lived in the Logan area since 2010. I work as a tutor and teacher aide, study secondary education, and volunteer as a youth mentor.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

Major party politicians have been captured by corporate interests. That means they put the property developers and big mining corporations who donate to their campaigns ahead of our climate, our natural places like the Eagleby Wetlands, and our healthcare and education services. We need to ban corporate donations and introduce a national independent anti-corruption commission.

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament?

I’ll make billionaires and big corporations pay their fair share of tax so we can bring back free uni and TAFE, raise Jobseeker and the pension, and fund an urgent, jobs-rich response to climate change.

SAMUEL HOLLAND

Electorate: Forde

Party: TNL (The New Liberals)

What suburb do you live in?

Yatala.

Why are you running?

Because my grandmother died believing in this government. And, despite that, this government have done everything in their power, over the past three years, to fail her. When the title of the royal commission into aged care is titled ‘neglect’ and there are stories of people with maggots in their wounds, others left to sit in their own filth for a week, and others being served rotten food. We deserve better than a government that makes excuses for why they won’t fix the aged care system.

What political experience do you have?

I am not a career politician. I actually want to become a physician. But after decades of being ignored by its leaders, my community of Forde needs healing; and we need someone that isn’t from either of the big parties to start that process.

So my commitment to the people of Forde is this: I want to get in, create a federal ICAC with teeth, save the Eagleby Wetlands, and start investing in the Forde community. If you vote LNP or ALP you’ll just get another backbencher who will spend their term fighting to stay alive at the next election.

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

I am a scientist in the fields of microbiology and biochemistry. Part of my reason for running is because of my training. I believe this government has done a very poor job in managing the pandemic and its impacts on Australia. So that made me question what else they may have done poorly. After speaking to experts from several fields, I have come to opinion that they have done a fairly poor job on almost all of their portfolios over the past three years. The era of sub-par work and rorts needs to end. We need a new era of competency to reinvigorate Australian politics.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

The number one issue, in my opinion, is that no one can trust politicians. It’s little surprise that my electorate are the least politically engaged in the country when they are also clearly one of the most politically neglected.

Everywhere I go, in the electorate, I hear stories of people who have been ignored or sidelined by the incumbent. That’s just not good enough. Especially given corruption is the act of an MP acting in their own interests over their community’s. Under that definition, how can the incumbent not be corrupt if he doesn’t even take the time to seriously listen to the people he is supposed to represent?

This is why we need a federal independent anti-corruption watchdog to ensure our politicians cannot act like this. The moment politicians are held accountable for their actions, they will start acting in their communities’ best interests and not their own.

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament?

The three things that I will be fighting for are: 1/ The establishment of a federal ICAC with teeth that can place corrupt politicians in gaol. 2/ I will be fighting for a federal bill of rights that will give all Australians the Right to Freedom of Expression, amongst others; this is especially important given that the current government’s top priority has been the silencing of differing opinions within the House of Representatives. 3/ I will be fighting for investment in Forde-centric infrastructure. This includes funding for an Olympic venue in Logan and changes to the suggested Coomera Connector upgrade that the current federal and state governments are on route to destroy the culturally significant and ecologically unique Eagleby Wetlands; that would provide so much economic benefit for my community through ecotourism if they were protected.

ROWAN HOLZBERGER

Seat: Forde

Party: Australian Labor Party

What suburb do you live in?

Beenleigh

Why are you running?

I’m running because every day I hear from families who are struggling to get ahead, from hardworking people worried about their jobs and older people who are quietly terrified about going into aged care in the neglected state it’s in.

I hear from mums and dads with little kids who can’t find a house to rent, let alone dream of buying one.

Because of these experiences, I am deeply passionate about affordable housing, protecting Medicare, affordable quality childcare and rebuilding local industries – all part of Labor’s plan for a better future for Forde.

What political experience do you have?

I have always had a love of politics, because politics is fundamentally about helping people.

But with the price of everything going up except your pay, hardworking Australians have never worked so hard for so little, and it’s getting harder and harder for people to get ahead.

It’s in times like these you can either sit back and let the future shape you, or stand up and shape the future, and I think we can do better than this.

We can build a better future. A future where no one is held back, and no one is left behind.

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

The Holzbergers have been in Beenleigh since the 1850s. And now, I live with my family right here – it’s where my kids go to school today. I wouldn’t want to live, and raise my family anywhere else.

Outside of politics I have real life experience, which is so often overlooked in politics. I understand the day-to-day struggles families face with the rising cost of living and stagnating wages. I have worked in farming, construction, as well as a small business owner.

I can draw on all these experiences if I’m fortunate enough to represent Forde in Canberra.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

The last few years has shown us the importance of a world class health system, something that cannot be taken for granted.

I hear stories of people having to wait weeks to see a bulk billing GP or face rising out-of-pocket costs, the story is even worse for specialist appointments.

In the last six months, the trickle of GPs stopping bulk billing is becoming a flood. Seven practices have just stopped bulk billing, including two in Upper Coomera.

The election the future of Medicare is at stake. The key pillar of our plan for a better future is to strengthen Medicare and protect bulk billing, making it easier for everyone in Forde to get the healthcare they need, when they need it.

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament?

I want to get to work immediately strengthening Medicare by making it easier to see a doctor, establishing a Medicare urgent care clinic on the Gold Coast to take pressure of emergency departments and ensuring that everyone can see a bulk billing GP, when they need one.

Governments should be able to walk and chew gum at the same time, so we also must make more things here in Australia and restore our manufacturing base. Our Future Made in Australian Plan will create more secure jobs by co-investing with business in strategic industries like manufacturing to make more things in Australia again.

SESCHELLE MATTERSON

Electorate: Forde

Party: One Nation

What suburb do you live in?

Tamborine Mountain

Why are you running?

The motivation to begin a career in the field of politics was progressively increased after the past three years of research, whereby I developed an increased awareness and understanding of factors and driving forces behind Australia’s economic dilemma. On a local level, it has been devastating to witness local counsel, under a QLD Labor Government, cripple the taxpayers’ businesses.

Secondarily, the psychological impact this has had on family’s mental health and relationships, has led to ‘normal psychological interventions’, having limited positive outcomes for improving mental health. This is due to the ongoing adjustments, uncertainties and unpredictability of legislation changes and health directions, making it impossible for local businesses and families to have any sense of security for their future.

Suicide rates and Domestic Violence has escalated, along with, divisions between close family members and friends, because of Vaccine mandates. All these factors, have significantly escalated people’s anxiety and depression, along with other mental health issues. The current Government have a great deal to answer for, and I for one, will not sit back and live in hope, that all will return to ‘Normal’ for the Australian people, whilst governed under officials that have and continue to NOT, focus on the best interest of the Australian people.

What political experience do you have?

Other than the intense three years of research I do not have any experience in politics. However, the research has well educated me in most facets of worldwide politics and in particular, Australian politics.

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

During my career working in private practise as a psychologist for more than 17 years, my primary focus has and continues to be assisting children, teens, adults, and families on the Autism Spectrum. My career commenced with contributing to the development of the ‘Family Relationship Centre’ on the Gold Coast, participating in mediation/child focused processes, with complex families after separation. Prioritisation has been meeting the needs of the local community, by means of, mentoring and training school staff, medical practitioners, and legal professionals, establishing the ‘Young Einstein’s Academy’ in early 2020 and developing a ‘Natural Integrative Therapy Program’, which supports the necessary interventions for children and teens on the Autism Spectrum.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

For the first time in the history there has been a significant increase in Australians taking a vested interest in politics and carefully thinking about their vote. The Australian people are more aware and awake than ever before in the reality of the reasons our country is suffering on all levels. The current Government, have and continue to compromise the economy and the best interests of the Australian people.

The main issue is the false and misleading ways to have their vote count and to ensure each vote is counted ethically. People need to be made very aware of how important it is to understand how to fill out their ballot paper and how imperative it is for them to vote in person and not via any other means.

Comment: Mr Sutherland did not respond to our request for comment. The following is from the Liberal Democrats website.

Tobby is a dedicated faith filled man, husband, and dad to a 5-year-old daughter, 2-year-old son, and loveable golden retriever. He has a patriotic love for his country and at a young age he had the honour of representing Australia at the World Athletic Championships. He went on to hold a scholarship at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra where he was ranked number one in Australia for the 400 metre hurdles.

Since then, he has been teaching in southeast Queensland for the last 12 years and is committed to developing lifelong learners that can contribute to their community in a positive way. As a teacher, he is currently witnessing firsthand the effects that the lockdowns, mask mandates, and woke ideologies are having on our younger generation.

The rising cost of living, national debt, and government overreach has drawn him to serve the electorate of Forde, the state of Queensland, and the Australian people. His determination to defend Australian liberties that have been slowly eroded away is evident and he is a person with the courage to see the return of common sense in parliament.

CHRISTOPHER GREAVES

Electorate: Forde

Party: Independent

What suburb do you live in?

Beenleigh

Why are you running?

Over the past two years I have seen and experienced firsthand, the pain and hurt our governments, state and federal, have caused through their appalling overreach. I have seen how our political representatives ignored us. I have seen how quickly politicians abdicated their responsibilities to unelected bureaucrats and blindly followed a narrative which was without consultation with the people. I realised the dangerous precedent this set and felt it my duty to stand up as a voice for the average Australian.

What political experience do you have?

None. I am not a career politician which I believe makes me more suited to being a true representative of the people of Forde, with true roots in the community and an understanding of the real issues affecting the average person. Running as a fully self-funded independent I am not bound to any party, lobbyist or owe any entity any favours. I therefore know that I can be a real voice for the people and bring honest and transparent representation to parliament for the people of Forde

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

My work experience has been varied, from working in the food industry, construction, landscaping, council, warehousing and a MC truck driver.

My life experience is the same mixed bag of adventures. After moving to Beenleigh 17 years ago I joined the local AFL club and have been playing for them since. I believe in giving back and thus have been a coach to the juniors at the club for the past 7 years. I am also a driver mentor at the PCYC Beenleigh helping kids without access to cars gain their 100 hours driving experience which I truly enjoy and have lots of fun doing.

Personally I have been a mental health carer for my boy’s mother, which resulted in me becoming a single dad. A while later I met my adorable now wife of 2 years.

To break it down I’ve had great times and down times, and understand the battles average Australians face because I am one.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

Across the political spectrum, the majority of people feel strongly that political parties, especially the major parties, pretend to care about the people, but actually don’t. That they feel voiceless and ignored. That our run of the mill politicians only pay lip service to the people and most serve hidden agendas, the party above the people, themselves or external forces and not the people of Australia.

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament?

I will introduce the concept of Informed Direct Democracy for the people of Forde. Informed Direct Democracy is a concept my team and I have been working on, which I believe will revolutionise our democratic landscape. As mentioned, people feel that they do not have a voice and are ignored. Informed Direct Democracy will give people a direct means of participating in the decisions that affect them. It consists effectively of a website having three components, being:

1. A first portal where legislation and amendments to legislation before Parliament is listed showing the name of the bill, a link to the bill and a summary of the bill in layman’s terms. People of Forde will have the opportunity to cast a vote on each bill by accepting it, rejecting it or proposing amendments to it.

2. A second portal where people of Forde could raise issues or make proposals that affect them or is of importance and on which the community can then cast a vote in favour of, or in opposition of any listed proposals.

3. A third portal where I will make proposals as to matters I believe are important or need to be addressed. Again, people will have the option to show support, offer input or reject any proposal I present.

By having transparent feedback from my electorate, I can give them for the first time a voice to have a say and have a real impact on the direction government takes that affect their lives. It will function as a barometer of public sentiment which will offer transparency, accountability and true representation.

The number of votes in favour of, in rejection of or requesting amendments will be visible to the general public, obviously protecting each individual who voted by simply displaying the sum total of votes, and the total in each category being acceptance, rejection or amendment.

A further benefit this will bring to our democratic system is the easy access thousands of people will have to scrutinise complex legislation and keeping their eyes on potential pitfalls. In a sense, it is like crowd sourcing legislation.

If anything passes Parliament which is in clear violation of the feedback and tally of votes from the electorate of Forde, it would indicate that the government is out of touch with the wishes of the people which will allow people to hold their representatives accountable.

Obviously, I would hope that other elected members would adopt the concept of Informed Direct Democracy because I believe that it will eliminate or at least reduce the back room deals that I believe are a huge problem and corruption. Simply, if the people don’t want it, I as their representative should not vote for it.

>> McPHERSON

KAREN ANDREWS

Electorate: McPherson (incumbent)

Party: LNP

Where do you live?

The north part of the McPherson electorate.

Why are you running?

My motivation from day one has been to be a voice in Canberra for those in our community who don’t have a voice. Also, particularly in these uncertain times, I know how important it is to have stable, responsible government that delivers in the national interest.

What political experience do you have? I’ve represented the people of McPherson since 2010. I was honoured to become the first ever female federal Cabinet Minister from Queensland in 2018, as Minister for Industry, Science and Technology. In that role I worked with Australian industry as the pandemic began to secure our supply chains and produce vital PPE. Just over a year ago, I became the first female Minister for Home Affairs. And in that role, I’m working to keep communities around Australia safe, protect our national interest and oversee the safe re-opening of Australia’s international borders, as part of the Government’s plan to secure our economic recovery.

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have? After graduating with a mechanical Engineering degree, I worked at power stations in Queensland and petrochemical plants in Victoria.

Then I launched my own Human Resources and Industrial Relations Consultancy, which gave me first-hand experience of the pressures of owning and running a small business. And of course, I only finished the school runs in 2020! I’ve raised three young women I’m very proud of, so I know the joy and challenges of raising a family.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

Household budgets are often stretched and cost-of-living is one of the biggest issues, particularly for those on fixed or low incomes. That’s why we’ve been determined to deliver tax cuts and ease cost of living pressures, like fuel prices. And it’s why managing our economy is so important – people can’t afford for interest rates to go through the roof.

I also think that drug use and drug-related crime is something that really concerns people across the board. Whether it’s families worried about their children getting caught up in it or our seniors scared to go out at night. It’s something I’ve been determined to tackle as Home Affairs Minister – and we’ve boosted funding for the AFP and made record seizures of drugs at the border. Earlier this month, I announced the creation of two new Organised Crime Strike Teams to target illicit drugs, money laundering and other serious crime – with one team based primarily on the Gold Coast. So community safety is also one of the top issues.

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament?

My first priority is always fighting for what we need on the Coast – helping local small businesses grow and create jobs, improving our local roads, making our community safer, delivering better health services, protecting our environment, supporting our seniors and veterans. Of course, under a re-elected Morrison Government, I’d also be focused on protecting Australia’s national interest in an increasingly complex threat environment. Like keeping people smugglers out of business and ensuring the boats remain stopped. Securing the digital tools and technologies that all Australians rely on, through a continued focus on cybersecurity and protecting critical infrastructure. And making sure our law enforcement and intelligence agencies have the resources they need to keep our nation safe.

KEVIN HARGRAVES

Seat: McPherson

Party: One Nation

What suburb do you live in?

Pacific Pines 4211, born and bred on the Gold Coast!

Why are you running?

I have never had any inclination to be a politician but seeing what’s been happening the last few years, I decided no good complaining, just put my hand up and have a go. I believe that the country is losing its democracy and freedom and its time for people to stand and get things happening.

What political experience do you have?

I have no direct political experience, but you don’t need experience to listen act and work for the best interests of the people, always.

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

I have been a successful businessman for more than 40 years, buying poorly run businesses and building them to re-sell. I have banking experience and accounting education. I have learned how to get things done and am big on accountability.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

If elected my opinions don’t matter, I’ll only act for the constituents on their behalf. In my time campaigning and meeting as many people as I have so far, the number one issue that keeps getting mentioned is the excessive cost of living and affordable energy, followed closely by housing, both are issues we have policies on.

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament?

To always be honest and put the people I represent first, always. To be transparent to the people I represent and accountable for the decisions I make for the betterment of the region and those who call it home.

Comment: Mr Pead did not respond to our request for comment. The following is from the Australian Federation Party website.

I am a business and Climate Change leader with a 23-year history of community, social and political involvement in the McPherson electorate. My father, Jim Pead, was also a politically independent civic leader. He fought interference from the major parties for 30 years whilst developing Canberra City for citizens and was honoured with a state funeral in recognition of his successful efforts.

My own successful record of defeating retail monopolies, establishing a World Heritage National Park, presenting a Housing & Rent affordability policy, and providing leadership over 30 years in Climate Change reflect my experience working in Government (including Treasury in Canberra), Private and Small Business Sectors.

I offer costed solutions addressing the issues of rising living costs, protecting superannuation for retirees, Climate Change emission targets and Banking and Finance, all based on my own experience. I am determined to keep the pressure on political parties, to hold them accountable and to act in Parliament in the best interest of citizens, always placing people, before profit and party politics.

SCOTT TURNER

Electorate: McPherson

Party: Queensland Greens

What suburb do you live in?

Elanora (surrounded by trees with a dog and some bee hives). I am fortunate to receive visits from koalas and wallabies, but could do with a better bus service.

Why are you running?

I’m running to take on the many challenges and opportunities the southern Gold Coast is facing, like growth, globalisation, the digital economy and climate change. I believe we need a representative who doesn’t take donations from corporations, because politicians should work for the needs of the people, not vested interests which destroy our way of life.

What political experience do you have?

I’ve volunteered with the Greens for some time. I was the Greens candidate for Fadden in the 2019 Federal Election and Mudgeeraba in the 2020 Queensland state election.

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

I grew up here and went to Palm Beach-Currumbin State High School. I began my career in scientific research and have since worked in administration in the areas of healthcare, crisis accommodation, mental health and education and as a customer service agent for TransLink.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

Affordable housing is number one. Major party policies have driven housing costs up, it’s easier to buy your fifth home than your first, and a tight rental market is driving too many people into poverty and even homelessness.

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament?

I’ll fight for affordable housing for everyone. The Greens’ fully-costed housing policies include building 1 million affordable social homes across Australia over the next 20 years, a shared ownership scheme so first home buyers can own a home for $300,000, a cap on rent increases, ending no-grounds evictions and banning rent bidding.

ANDY CULLEN

Electorate: McPherson

Party: Australian Values Party

What suburb do you live in? Tallai

Why are you running?

I have followed Australian and international politics for most of my life; however, I have never considered running as a candidate or pursuing a career in politics. After observing the decline in Australian politics throughout the pandemic and seeing how many individuals, families and businesses have been adversely affected by state and federal policy makers, I decided something needed to change. I met Heston through our veteran charity work and his involvement with the Royal Commission into Veteran Suicide and the Voice of a Veteran organisation. We connected both personally and professionally, as like-minded individuals seeking better opportunities for the veteran community and wider Australian public. I was asked to run for the party in my local electorate on the Gold Coast and after much deliberation I decided I could not expect others to do something I was not prepared to do myself, so I said yes and the process of serving my community and country in a new way has begun. I am here to support the people of McPherson and the Australian people as best I can in my capacity as a leader in the community.

What political experience do you have?

I have no political experience; however, I do have leadership experience. Whether it be on the battlefields of Afghanistan, running trauma healing courses in our community or in the halls of parliament; I can lead with integrity and fierce loyalty to the Australian people. I believe the people have had enough of politicians and are ready for community minded individuals to stand up and represent them on issues that matter. Too many of our political class are representing parties, big business or foreign interests. It’s time to remind these politicians who they actually work for. The Australian people.

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

Andy is a happily married father of four children and leader in his community. He is a highly decorated combat Veteran, of 17 years’ service in the Australian Army.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

Loss of constitutional freedoms and governmental overreach, followed by economic instability and inflation.

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament?

Bringing accountability back to Canberra including:

• A royal commission into the handling of the COVID 19 pandemic.

• Ensuring that respect for the freedom and dignity of the Australian citizen is prioritised.

• Commitment to the rule of law under our constitution.

• Establishing policies focused on:

o A more enjoyable way of life

o A self-sustainable Australian economy

o Self-sufficient security within our region

Joshua Berrigan, United Australia Party candidate for McPherson.

Electorate: McPherson

Party: United Australia Party

What suburb do you live in?

Elanora

Why are you running?

I’ve always been interested in politics and followed it closely as I know how much it impacts our everyday lives. I have spent the last 15 years working in the community helping people who are doing it tough. This is and has always been my passion - to be an advocate for people and to help move their lives forward. The past two years have been devastating for so many individuals and families and not because of the pandemic, but because of the governments response to the pandemic. Through combining my passion for politics and people, I realise that the best way that I can help the people in my community is to represent them in Canberra. We need to have politicians who care about the people and will not bow their knee to corporate interests and party politics, but instead implement policies that will actually make a positive difference in the lives of people they were voted in to represent.

What political experience do you have?

While this is my first professional foray into politics, I’ve done my fair share of managing political landscapes. I spent the last decade working as a pastor for a church with a multinational presence. In my role, I had oversight and managed hundreds of volunteers and looked after thousands of congregants from all walks of life and political view points. I spend a large chunk of my time coordinating charitable events, managing public Christmas and large scale celebrations for the community. I’ve spent a career listening to and ensuring I look after people and communities.

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

I hold two Bachelor qualifications in Law and International Business, as well as a post grad diploma in Education. My wife and I run a small business in the personal health space and have been able to build business networks in Australia and internationally. My wife, Shae is originally from the US, so we have spent quite a lot of time over there as well. Further, as I touched on above, I have worked with a Christian Church organisation for the past decade, where I spent lots of my time in mentoring and pastoral care roles, as well as chaplaincy at local state schools where I was privileged to be able to assist families going through tough times.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

The number one issue we hear about in McPherson and in the Gold Coast is the affordability of housing. People are leaving the area as the price of property continues to rise to a level that’s genuinely unaffordable. Adding to this issue is the rising cost of living. Hard working people are struggling to make ends meet as interest rates, housing prices and the price of living continues to go up.

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament?

I want to establish good working relationships with my colleagues from other parties, regardless of their party. In my opinion, we are all involved in politics as we want to do a better job for the Australian people. I would work to support the community, with my aim to tackle core issues impacting Australians including the rising costs of living, inflation, interest and housing rate hikes. Simply put, if elected my priority is to genuinely respond to the needs of our community. I want to steer away from being an elected official that tells people what to do. We’ve heard from so many people about how frustrated they are because of how the government is dictating and telling them what to do, rather than just listening and working to meet the needs they have - this needs to change.

Glenn Pyne, Liberal Democrats candidate for McPherson.

Electorate: McPherson

Party: Liberal Democrats

What suburb do you live in?

I live in Wongawallan

Why are you running?

I am running because I have a passion for libertarian values and believe the Liberal Party has moved too far away from its roots and ideals as expressed in its Federal Platform Document.

What political experience do you have?

I have very little political experience but have experience in leadership as a head of department, and as a principal in schools here and in the United States.

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

I am a passionate teacher of many years experience with advanced degrees in administration and leadership. I also am a paralympic athlete and have a rich history in sport and competition at international level and the dedication needed to compete against the best in the world.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

I believe the number one issue facing voters in McPherson is the removal of their liberty at the whim of state and federal governments and the removal of family as the cornerstone of a free, democratic society to be replaced by the cloistered views of self serving, entitled academics and their political elites.

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament?

My priority will be to push the government back towards the sensible alternative values of a free and independent Australia upholding the rights of a free citizenry, released from the tyrannies of big government, big business interference and elitist social engineering.

Electorate: McPherson

Party: Labor

What suburb do you live in?

Currumbin Valley

Why are you running?

I love living on the Southern Gold Coast but the GC has been neglected for too long by the LNP and Scott Morrison. Our community want a trusted plan to help build a better future rather than suffering from more failures, more mistakes under more of Scott Morrison.,

I’m running because I will be a strong advocate for these things, and only an Albanese Labor Government will deliver them.

What political experience do you have?

I have 25 years’ experience working in the Federal Government as a Diplomat, Intelligence Officer and a political staffer.

I have also represented Australia overseas on diplomatic postings.

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

I began my working life as a primary school teacher, and have taught in schools and universities around the world, including here on the Gold Coast. I volunteer at the surf lifesaving club, the rural fire brigade and served as past President of our local P&C association.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

What I’m hearing is that people are tires of the lack of action taken by the Morrison government. People are sick of the rorts, the mistakes, the failures, and the waste.

The other key issues are the rising cost of living and the need to protect and strengthen Medicare.

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament?

I will be working from day one to represent the interests of the entire Southern Gold Coast, which has been neglected by Scott Morrison for too long.

Moncrieff MP Angie Bell. Picture: David Foote-AUSPIC/DPS.

Party: LNP (incumbent)

Seat: Moncrieff

Where suburb do you live in?

In the southern part of Moncrieff.

Why are you running?

To continue to deliver a strong economy for our community for a stronger future, including initiatives such as the Moncrieff Community Cabinet and the City Heart Taskforce for jobs, skills and industry.

What political experience do you have?

One term as the sitting member for Moncrieff. I have had the honour of representing our electorate on a range of Parliamentary committees. Some of those have included communications and the arts, employment, education and training and most recently appointed as chair of the social policy and legal affairs.

Prior to becoming the federal member for Moncrieff, I had a brief stint running the office of the former state member for Currumbin. The experience was highly valuable and assisted me to understand what a role in the public service entails and how to approach it with respect and a desire to build a stronger future for our region.

I was president of Queensland LNP Women from 2017 until 2019 and vice president for one year, leading the women’s branch of the Liberal National Party to encourage more women into politics.

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

Some may be surprised to learn that at the same time as working in business, sales and marketing, I was a professional saxophonist and travelled abroad for many years. I also have an electric piano in my office in Canberra to wind down after sitting. For many years I assisted business, particularly small businesses all around the country in business development, training, upskilling, and rebranding. I found there was a lack of information available for small business owners around the principals of rebranding, so I wrote a book called Retail Rebranded as a resource to industry professionals and for business owners who couldn’t afford a consultant but wanted to rebrand their small business.

What is the No.1 issue facing voters in your electorate?

Moncrieff has been subject to cost blowouts by the state Labor government and long avoidable delays to Stage 3 of light rail between Broadbeach and Burleigh. The Coomera Connector, which will ease congestion and get commuters home to Nerang sooner and safer, has also suffered state government delays. These projects are vital to the development of our region and I will continue to fight to get the best deal for the Gold Coast.

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament?

To deliver my local plan which includes:

Creating more, better paid jobs; Delivering tax relief for workers and small businesses; Investing in roads, rail and renewables; Making record investments in health and aged care; Investing in stronger defence to make Australia safer.

I will be pushing for the completion of light rail Stage 3 and a start to the Coomera Connector. In the next parliament if reelected, I will advocate for the ADaPT 1 building at Griffith University, which will enhance future innovation and high value jobs of the future for our region.

I have been in business for 35 years, 22 of them in manufacturing in Southport. Volunteered at the local community theatres in Moncrieff. Completed many endurance events, marathons, triathlon, etc.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

Number one issue in Moncrieff at the moment is our economy, businesses that have been closed during the last two years. Nurses, etc to be able to return to work. Bring the tourists to the Gold Coast.

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament?

On entering the new parliament my priorities would be as above. Also to bring back our manufacturing, we need work for our unskilled young people. This would also help resolve our growing drug problem in this country.

Seat: Moncrieff

Party: Australian Federation Party

Comment: Mr Tayler did not respond to our request for comment. The following is from the Australian Federation Party website.

I have lived in the seat of Moncrief for 36 years, until the electoral boundary changed – I now live across the road from Moncrief, and have done so for the last 14 years.

I have been a business owner of a civil engineering consultancy for 37 years. My wife and I have 7 children, and I have taken care of my elderly father for the past 13 years. In 2021, due to cognitive problems, I moved in with my father to provide 24/7 care. I found it a moving experience, one that I would not miss, and although it got messy at times, I embraced the challenge head on.

My bias is towards the liberal side of politics and will consider all reasonable policies. I support the Australian Federation Party (AusFedParty) and am committed to the “Public Pact”, and whilst AusFedParty may seem a minor party, it has been established as a credible alternative to “keep the bastards honest”.

SONIA MICHELLE BERRY-LAW

Why are you running?

I want to help introduce sustainable and compassionate decision making in politics to secure the interests and safe future of animals, people and our planet.

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

I have many years’ experience as an administrator, providing logistics, budgetary framework and governance in my day-to-day job. I have also worked on local and Federal government projects improving recycling markets and environmental remediation.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

Without a doubt, the number one issue, whether voters realise it or not, is our climate emergency. Unless it is addressed urgently, global heating will cause wide spread floods, fires, sea-level rises, unbearable temperatures and destruction of our planet. We are starting to feel the impacts now and we cannot ignore them for too much longer.

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new Parliament?

I will introduce legislation to urgently address climate change with a rapid phase out of fossil fuels and a transition away from animal agriculture.

Party: Queensland Greens

What suburb do you live in?

Southport

Why are you running?

I’m running because the Gold Coast deserves better than we’re getting under the LNP. Our city is being sold off to the highest bidder while ordinary people struggle. We need to fight back against the rich and powerful to make politics work for the rest of us.

What political experience do you have?

I’m a trained community organiser with several years’ experience volunteering for a number of climate movement organisations including the Australian Youth Climate Coalition, the Australian Conservation Foundation, and Stop Adani. I’ve been a member of the Greens for over eight years and was the Greens candidate for Broadwater in the 2020 Queensland state election.

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

I worked as a content writer before going back to university to do a Masters in Secondary Teaching. I have nine years experience working with school students, as a debating coach and adjudicator and as a boarding supervisor. During undergrad I took five months off to manage an animal shelter in rural Fukushima. In my spare time I rescue and rehabilitate pigeons.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

Cost of living is skyrocketing out of control – wages are stagnant while renting or buying a home is becoming out of reach for more and more people. That’s without factoring in other huge expenses like childcare and dental care!

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament?

Under the previous Labor minority government, the Greens used our position in the balance of power to get kids’ dental into Medicare. When we’re in the balance of power again, we’ll use it to fight for real action on climate change, expand Medicare to cover dental and mental health, and make the billionaires and corporations finally pay their fair share.

GLEN PALMER

Electorate: Moncrieff

Party: Labor

What suburb do you live in?

Nerang.

Why are you running?

For decades the Gold Coast has been held back by the LNP and we have not had a voice in parliament. As the country’s sixth largest city, we need representation that advocates for the needs of the 650,000 who call the Gold Coast home.

What political experience do you have?

While I have been involved in three election campaigns, I am no politician. I am a local, a worker, a dad who loves his family, the Gold Coast community and wants to deliver a better future for us all.

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

I have lived on the Gold Coast for 28 years and owned several small businesses over twenty years in our community. I changed careers ten years ago and gained a degree in Applied Social Science with the aim of becoming a counsellor, which I have achieved. I currently work as a counsellor for victims of violent crimes. Prior to this, I worked with child victims of domestic violence, women escaping domestic violence, and assisted men to stop using violence in their relationships via Men’s Behaviour Change group Programs. I’ve also worked with children with disabilities in foster care and their carers. I was a member of the Gilston/Advancetown rural Fire brigade for 10 years (several of those as second officer) and a Rotarian for several years in Nerang.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

The Gold Coast is crying out for affordable housing, an aged care system that supports our elderly, and representation at a federal level to recognise the size and value of our region.

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament?

I will get to work to serve our community by strengthening Medicare, delivering cheaper child care and creating more secure, better paying jobs.

Electorate: Moncrieff

Party: Liberal Democrats

What suburb do you live in?

I’ve been a Gold Coast resident since 1985 and have lived in Carrara in the Moncrieff electorate for 22 years.

Why are you running?

When I look at the representation we have across all levels of government it is blatantly clear that there are real options on how we can better govern our country, however the major parties have their heads buried in the sand. As I witnessed our governments eroding our freedoms, rights, and liberty over the past two years, I was compelled to stand up for our democracy and the Australian way of life and advocate for individual liberty, smaller government, and lower taxes.

What political experience do you have?

I have no political experience and that’s what makes me the perfect representative for Moncrieff. The duopoly of the major parties offer no real difference in policy and it’s time to bring more truth, transparency, and trust to the political landscape, something someone that is not beholden to them can bring.

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

My life and business career places me in good stead to understand what the city needs in a federal representative. This includes owning two multi-award-winning businesses, an internationally acclaimed resort in Vanuatu and a quality accredited, Australian company with hundreds of staff across four states. I’m also a successful leadership and mindset speaker, executive coach and trainer and won an International Women’s Day Leadership Award.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

To be honest there are two major issues facing the electorate, cost of living and trust in government. It’s no secret fuel at record highs, even with the recent excise cut, housing availability and affordability approaching crisis levels, and inflation heading into dangerous territory means people need more money just to live and the major parties don’t have a concrete plan on how to solve this dire situation. Second, because of the mandates and government overreach for the past two years, people’s trust that the government is working on their behalf has been lost and this is something I want to restore.

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament?

My first point of business will be to fulfil my promise to the constituents and fight for the policies and plans I have announced to help get Australia back on track. I am a woman of my word, and my word is my bond. I will always serve at the pleasure of the people of Moncrieff and will work as hard if not harder, once elected to get the job done.

TIMOTHY CUDMORE

Electorate: Moncrieff

Party: Informed Medical Options Party

What suburb do you live in?

I live in Upper Coomera.

Why are you running?

I refuse to give up without a fight. I have been bullied, abused and pushed around my entire life because of my disability and the way I think. Our State and Federal Government have abused the power that was trusted to them, and now they need to be held accountable for their wrong doings. A true leader should never force others to do something they won’t do themselves.

What political experience do you have?

None, and I’d argue that’s a good thing. Look at where career politicians and corrupt political parties have got us. Australia is more corrupt than ever. If you want positive change, you need to change the system that causes the problem.

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

24 years with a disability, living through pain and suffering that few others could possibly imagine. I use all that I have experienced to help others who are currently struggling in their own personal journeys. Trauma and disability is my speciality, both of which are now needed more than ever as we face the disastrous effects of a corrupt and greedy political class who have abandoned their people for personal profit. We will endure the negative effects of this mandates/lockdowns for generations.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

Ending the domestic violence crisis. Moncrieff has always been a Liberal seat and the number of DV related violence have consistently risen for the last decade. Logic tells us that this trend will continue rising unless you change the system that allows said abuse to happen.

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament?

There is a massive difference between what I would do, and what I can actually do. Most would answer, end the mandates and get people their jobs back, but unless I hold the balance of power, that’s a promise no single Member can make.

Realistically, I will go straight after the TGA and reveal as much data as possible to the Australian people. The TGA and AHPRA need to be held accountable.

DIANE HAPP

Seat: Moncrieff

Party: United Australia Party

What suburb do you live in?

Mermaid Beach

Why are you running?

For the future of all children and Australia in general. With the debt our country is in our children will never have a future. Our governments have been taking our country to the wall for too many years with no plan to get rid of the debt. I have always been passionate about politics and an activist in trying to save the world. I fight for justice and what I believe in.

I also want to get rid of these mandates and have our medical and education professionals back at work. I do not believe the government has the right to own our bodies and to threaten people’s livelihoods is beyond criminal.

It is beyond ridiculous that our hospitals are short staffed and we have all these nurses out of work.

What political experience do you have?

I have run twice for parliament, the first time was in the seat of Wentworth for what used to be the Democrats and I had the highest swing of any candidate in Australia, so much so that the Democrats offered me a direct seat in the Senate when Senator Liz Kirby resigned. I sadly declined the offer at the time. The second time I ran was for Palmer United in the seat of Kingsford Smith.

Outside politics, what life and work experience do you have?

I am an entrepreneur and have owned my own business for the best part of my career. I pioneered radio broking in Australia and used to have a medium-sized advertising agency for many years. I still do have the business however, a lot smaller now. My radio business took a big hit with Covid. I also have an Events Company and had the Wine and Food Festival at the Commonwealth Games.

What, in your opinion, is the number one issue facing voters in your electorate?

To keep tourism alive and keep our small businesses going, not close borders and have mandates stopping businesses from getting staff. Many in my electorate have suffered enormously.

If elected, what will be your priority when you enter the new parliament?

To be rid of corruption and the lies that are being told to Australians by our politicians. To reveal the truth of what our politicians have been doing.
