IT'S official. Storm season is here and it has captured the Gold Coast's clear blue skies, for the next week at least.

Thunder storms have just missed the city in the past few days, but weather experts say a large storm cell is likely to hit the Gold Coast on Thursday afternoon bringing thunder, lightning and rain.

Two low-pressure systems moving towards the Queensland east coast are responsible for the gloomy weather which is expected to bring many showers and storms throughout the week.

The mercury is set to reach about 27C each day, dropping to 20C overnight, but the humidity will be the killer with predications of over 80 per cent humidity for the next week.

Weatherzone meteorologist Rob Sharpe said rain would definitely fall, breaking the city's ongoing dry spell, but how much would be anyone's guess.

"It could be 2mm or 20mm, when storms are involved it can be unpredictable, but one thing we know for sure is rain is coming and it will be humid," he said.

"The days will be very humid, with showers predicted for most afternoons, but Thursday is the most likely. A low-pressure system is bringing this weather and another low pressure trough will move through on the weekend bringing more rain and possible storms."

Gold Coast beaches are set to be spared with onshore winds too light to whip up big seas, waves of about 1m are expected along the Coast.

Surfing conditions will be choppy, but experienced surfers are recommended to try Snapper Rocks for surfable waves.

The rain is predicted to last for most of the annual Schoolies festival, which will kick off on Saturday when more than 30,000 graduates descend on Surfers Paradise.
