A man who scaled a third floor Surfers Paradise balcony and was involved in a dramatic alleged stand-off with police has been charged with a string of offences.
A police spokeswoman said a member of the public raised the alarm after they spotted a man allegedly breaking into a car rental business on Trickett St, Surfers Paradise, around 5.45am Thursday.
When police arrived, the man fled to a nearby unit on the street and refused to come out, police alleged.
He was also captured on video scaling a balcony before being detained.
After almost an hour of police negotiations, the 29-year-old Park Ridge man was arrested around 6.45am.
He was charged with wilful damage, enter premises, attempted unlawful use of a motor vehicle and two counts of obstruct police.
The man was due to face Southport Magistrates Court on Friday.
Witness Wes Newton, who was staying with friends at a third floor unit in the building, said they were woken up by the commotion.
“We saw police cars zooming around. And then all of a sudden my friend’s gone, look, it’s right here. The guy had come up into these units and gone into the adjacent room,” Mr Newton said.
“The police were yelling and screaming. They kicked the door in.
“... They busted in through the door and he’s launched over to the one below and then just got in that.
“And that’s when the (stand-off) took place and they were talking to him, trying to get him out.”
The man landed onto the balcony of the unit beneath and entered the home of Jaylan Yilmaz, who was not home at the time.
CCTV footage from inside that unit showed the man helping himself to the contents of Mr Yilmaz’s fridge before using the fridge to barricade himself inside the home.
“We were in the middle of moving out of that place as it is being renovated but we’ve got a lot of things still there,” Mr Yilmaz told media.
“Lots of personal, sentimental items of value that just can’t be replaced.”
In an unusual attempt to get the man out of his apartment, Mr Yilmaz said he streamed Justin Bieber songs from his phone on to speakers in the unit and turned it up “pretty loud”.
“He wasn’t a big fan,” he said.
Mr Yilmaz’s partner Keeleigh Anderson said it looked like the offender had made himself at home.
“Absolutely all of our stuff just gone through, just nitpicked everything,” she said.
Investigations are continuing.
