THE Gold Coast region is one of the most storm-affected areas in Queensland, with four suburbs featuring in the state’s top 10.

According to a survey by NRMA Insurance, Helensvale is the city's worst storm-affected area and the fourth most severely impacted suburb across Queensland.

Ashmore, Oxenford and Southport also make the top 10 list as the seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively, most severely impacted suburbs in the state.

The areas of Arundel, Runaway Bay, Robina, Nerang, Parkwood, Burleigh Waters and Upper Coomera make the city’s top-10 list of most storm-hit localities.

NRMA Insurance executive general manager of claims Luke Gallagher said the data indicated the state experienced one of the most severe storm seasons on recent record, with 46 per cent of all home claims in Queensland in the 2019-20 financial year the result of storm damage.

He said the five-year average for Queensland was 41 per cent.

“With Australia currently experiencing a La Nina weather system, we could see more severe storms and more intense rain hitting Queensland throughout storm season this year,” he said.

He said the fact many households were not prepared “was a major concern”.

“We’re urging Queenslanders to put aside some time to get storm ready by clearing their gutters and downpipes at home,” he said. “Please be careful though and if in doubt, hire a professional.”

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Livio Regano said Gold Coasters should expect storms once or twice a week throughout the 2020-21 summer period, which was in stark contrast to the “past 15 years of dry”.
