Rural fire brigade gets Mudgeeraba grassfire under control

THE smoke causing havoc on the M1 at Mudgeeraba has eased according to fire and emergency crews.

UPDATE:

THE smoke causing havoc on the M1 at Mudgeeraba has eased according to fire crews.

After three hours of hard work firefighters have now got the fire under control, a Queensland and Emergency Services spokeswoman said.

With the fire under control she said smoke is no longer billowing across the highway.

2PM UPDATE:

TRAFFIC on the M1 is reportedly now backed up as far north at Coomera.

Police said in some areas it is believed to have ground to a halt due to the grassfire which has been burning at Mudgeeraba for more than two hours.

Video footage from Gold Coast Bulletin readers shows smoke billowing across the motorway between the Merrimac and Robina exits.

Firefighters continue to work to put out the grass fire which has not threatened any private property.

1.30PM UPDATE:

SMOKE has been billowing across the M1 at Mudgeeraba for more than an hour now as firefighters work to extinguish the blaze in sweltering temperatures up to 30C.

Police said the fire is causing traffic to slow on the in the area surrounding Mudgeeraba Road which includes the busy M1.

Fire and emergency services workers said the rural fire brigade has been called in to reach the fire that larger fire trucks have been unable to access.

Workers also said no private property or structures have been threatened by the fire.

EARLIER:

FIRE and rescue crews are working to put out a grass fire in Mudgeeraba.

Three fire trucks have been called to the blaze at Mudgeeraba Road which has sent plumes of smoke into the sky.

Fire and rescue workers said they were called to the blaze shortly before midday and expect to have the fire under control shortly.
