Thousands of angels flood Gold Coast beaches for record-breaking effort

The Gold Coast has clinched a new world record, raising thousands of dollars for the drought-affected communities in the process. SEE THE VIDEO.

MORE than a thousand people have got up early to break a world record on the Gold Coast this morning.

The Gold Coast broke the world record for having the most people making “sand angels” – the beach version of a snow angel – at one time on Broadbeach’s Kurrawa Beach.

The title was held by a town in Michigan, USA since 2017 at 1387 people.

But the Gold Coast smashed the record, with 1635 people taking part just before 7am.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said his pride in the city was “immense”.

“The Gold Coast have-a-go spirit was alive and kicking this morning. We had people from all across the city take part, from local schools and community clubs, international students to our Gold Coast Suns and Gold Coast Titans,” he said.

“We even had people make the journey from Brisbane and northern New South Wales. It makes me proud to see everyone come together to help make history for the Gold Coast.”

Painstaking effort went into ensuring the numbers stacked up.

But it will take about 12 weeks to officially verify the achievement through Guinness World Records.

The event was used as a fundraiser for drought relief with more than $22,000 raised for charity.

Drought Angels director and co-founder Tash Johnston said it was touching to see the beach come together and give a helping hand to the bush.

“Gold Coasters have slipped on their angel wings and risen to the occasion,” she said.

“It means so much to our farming families and rural communities that their city counterparts are thinking of them, especially in the lead-up to Christmas.”

102.9 Hot Tomato and Channel 9’s Today Show broadcast live from the beach.
