CAROL-singing fairies, angels and elves twirled through the night sky to spread Christmas joy to thousands of Gold Coast families.
The Broadwater Parklands were lit up with millions of shining Christmas lights and holiday punters were treated to blinding bursts of colour from festive fireworks.
The Mayor’s Christmas Carols had finally arrived.
Children spent the night sampling fairy floss and popcorn, and clapped along to stellar live acts on Saturday night.
Paige Wilson, 6, took the stage as one of Santa’s little helpers with her Molendinar-based dance group, Triple Talent. The bubbly Highland Park girl said she loved being in the spotlight.
“I love everything about dancing and I have made three best friends here,” she said. “Dancing is really fun when there are heaps of people watching.”
The Voice runner-up Luke Kennedy was the headline performance but Mayor Tom Tate also drew crowds with his rendition of Silent Night. “We are blessed to have some of the most talented artists on the Coast here tonight and the weather is perfect,” Cr Tate said.
“Considering all the storms earlier in the week we have been really lucky tonight.”
David De Vito, The Lions Den, Candice Skjonnemand, The Full Stops and councillor Bob La Castra all performed on the evening.
The fear of flash storms thinned the crowds but spirits were kept high by performances by local artists and city officials.
Stall owner and Popcorn Man master popper Greg Crow said Christmas joy was high, but consumer confidence was low.
“It has been a great night but the storms have scared a lot of people off,” he said. “Consumer sentiment is down by a mile so people aren’t as willing to spend their money.
“The children are still having a great time though.”
Carols by candlelight events begin at the Jacobs Well Community Centre and Oval and Surfers Paradise Beach on Sunday, December 21.
