A NEW lifeguard watch tower is set to be installed at one of the Gold Coast’s most popular beaches.
Mayor Tom Tate said what will become the city’s northernmost tower would be built between the sand pumping jetty and the Seaway at the Spit before summer next year.
He said lifeguards were the city’s “chief welcoming officers” and beach safety was a top priority.
“We know our lifeguards are among the fittest, most prepared and best drilled lifeguards in the world and we need to equip them with the best tools to ensure they can do their job,” Cr Tate said.

Acting Chief Lifeguard Chris Maynard the area was an extremely busy beach, especially in summer months.
“It’s an area that needs extra surveillance,” Mr Maynard said.
“This towers is extra surveillance, it’s a very popular area and it’s hard to see from the other side (of the sand pumping jetty).
“The area always has a lot of strong currents and rips, especially under the sand pumping jetting, it’s almost a permanent rip there.
“It’s always been a problem area — this new tower will just complement the existing tower.”
