The view might be worth a million bucks, but what about the brew to go with it?
Residents have taken to social media to slam what they say are “the most expensive” coffee prices on the Gold Coast at Surfers Paradise beachfront brekkie haunt 26 & Sunny.
A no-frills small latte or flat white at the cafe housed in the posh Langham Hotel Gold Coast will set diners back $7. A single 30ml shot of espresso demands $6 of your hard-earned cash.
Those wanting to upsize can expect to fork out $8 for a medium and $9 for a large.
But the cafe has defended its prices, saying they are “committed to creating the perfect beachfront cafe experience”.
“Since opening in June last year, we continually review our product, pricing and service delivery,” a 26 & Sunny spokesperson said.
“We are committed to creating the perfect beachfront cafe experience.
“We value our local customers and welcome their feedback...”
A Broadbeach resident took to social media at the weekend to slam the cafe’s prices.
A post reads: “I’ve found the most expensive coffee on the GC guys!
“And added bonus, it takes them 10 minutes to take your order for two coffees and they still get it wrong.”
The woman said she ordered a large latte with almond milk and an extra shot, which cost $11.
She also ordered a medium chai latte with soy for $9.
She told the Bulletin: “I had to double take the bill and I was thinking, did they add a croissant?”
“I’m a small-business owner so I don’t want to complain too much but those prices are outrageous.”
Seadog Burleigh owner Brodie Green said 26 & Sunny probably had a good reason for charging what they do, but added: “They also might be taking the p*ss because rich people go there”.
“The rent could be astronomically high too and its location – but $7 for a small coffee does seem fairly high,” Mr Green said.
Seadog charges $4.50 for a small latte and Mr Green said people “freaked out” when he raised the prices up from $4.
“It was $4 pretty much across the board on the Gold Coast for a good eight to 10 years so it’s a bit shocking people complain,” he said.
“And it’s even worse on public holidays when we have to implement a 15 per cent surcharge. We get a lot of complaints.
“What people don’t understand is that we have to pay our staff public holiday wages. If we don’t have the surcharge we may as well not even open.”
Mr Green said he has around one customer a month that makes a complaint about the $4.50 price tag.
Blackboard Varsity Lakes owner Nicole David rushed to defend 26 & Sunny and said “people need to stop whining”.
“Location plays a huge factor in the cost and it’s beautiful there right on the beach,” Ms David said.
“They have just completed the walkway along the beachfront at Surfers and it’s a gorgeous spot. I can’t understand why anyone would be complaining.”
She also said rent would likely be high given its beachfront location.
Ms David said the hospitality industry had been “hit hard enough” in the past two years during the pandemic.
She said supply issues for many cafes were a problem and Blackboard’s prices could go up.
Blackboard charges $4.50 for a small takeaway latte, but it is $5 to dine-in.
