SURFERS Paradise’s Pink Poodle Motel was knocked down years ago but its iconic sign will be immortalised on stamps.
Australia Post is celebrating three heritage-listed iconic signs from the golden age of
neon advertising and the strutting pink poodle will feature in the new issue.
The sign became a neon-lit lure for tourists, especially honeymooners, when the motel opened in 1967 and was synonymous with the Gold Coast’s colourful image.
The motel, on the corner of the Gold Coast Highway and Fern St, was demolished in 2004 and replaced by the 15-storey Mantra Wings resort.
But in a nod to the site’s past, the developers kept the famous Pink Poodle sign and named the resort’s bar and restaurant the Pink Poodle.
It was nominated as a Queensland Heritage Icon by the National Trust in 2005 and now stands in Fern Street near its original location.
Australia Post philatelic manager Michael Zsolt said people were becoming more conscious of
the visual value of historic neon signs.
“We hope this bright, nostalgic-themed stamp issue will resonate with the public and collectors alike,” he said.
Designed by John White of the Australia Post Design Studio, the issue comprises two
domestic base rate (70c) stamps and one large letter rate ($1.40) stamp.
Other icons to be featured include the Skipping Girl in Abbotsford, Victoria and Dandy Pig, Dandenong, also Victoria.
The stamp issue features a souvenir sheetlet pack in a concertina format.
The special pack houses three stamp sheetlets with a lit feature on the cover.
The Signs of the Times stamp issue is available from today at participating
Post Offices, via mail order on 1800 331 794 and online.
