Daredevil jumpers taking the plunge off Gold Coast bridges have been warned that the illegal activity will result in fines worth $689.
Bridges situated on southern parts of the Gold Coast Highway crossing over Tallebudgera Creek and Currumbin Creek have become popular locations for bridge jumpers this summer.
The clearance at Tallebudgera Creek Bridge is 2.2m and at Currumbin Creek Bridge it is 9m, according to the Maritime Safety Queensland Beacon to Beacon Guide.
On Sunday a boy in his late teens was rushed to Gold Coast Highway in a stable condition after jumping off Tallebudgera Creek Bridge.
A Gold Coast City Council spokesperson said fishing, diving and jumping off Tallebudgera Creek bridge were prohibited and regulatory signs prohibiting the activities were clearly displayed on the bridge.
“The City acts on complaints and offenders face a Penalty Infringement Notice of $689,” they said.
A Transport and Main Roads (TMR) spokesperson said it was working to crack down on the activity.
“Safety is of paramount importance. It is extremely disappointing that people continue to put their lives and that of others at risk by jumping off Tallebudgera and Currumbin Creek bridges,” they said.
“Not only is this behaviour dangerous, it is also illegal and there are fines under local laws.
“TMR will continue to liaise with Gold Coast City Council and Queensland Police Service to prevent this anti-social behaviour.”
Acting Chief Superintendent Rhys Wildman said police patrol Tallebudgera and a number of locations on the southern end of the Gold Coast to monitor the activity.
“It is really important to understand it’s up to individuals to look after their own safety,” he said.
“There is signage there and fences to prevent high-risk activities.”
Teen injured in bridge jump
January 30:
A teenager has been rushed to hospital after jumping off a bridge on Sunday.
The male in his late teens was jumping off Tallebudgera Creek Bridge on the Gold Coast Highway and was injured after “hitting the water wrong”.
Paramedics were called to the scene at 1:37pm where a Queensland Ambulance spokesperson said the patient would be checked for chest injuries. Initially it was reported he would be taken in for ‘spinal injury precaution’.
He was transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition.
The bridge is highly popular with jumpers, despite ample signage prohibiting the activity.
