Police are hunting for a man who allegedly threatened a teenage girl with a knife and robbed her as she was walking home from work in Surfers Paradise.
A Gold Coast police spokeswoman said the 19-year-old girl was walking along the Esplanade between Staghorn and View Avenues at around 3.30am on Monday when a man approached her.
He allegedly threatened her with a knife before stealing her handbag and phone.
The man then left the scene in a dark-coloured vehicle.
Superintendent Peter Miles said police had traced the vehicle and were confident of soon arresting the person responsible for what he called a “very concerning” and “harrowing” incident.
“It was about 3.30 this morning. She was walking home along the Esplanade when a male produced a knife and stole her handbag and then he decamped in a dark-coloured vehicle. Police were able to track that vehicle to a point where it was no longer on the camera network. Registrations details were gathered. So we’re aware of who’s associated with that vehicle, and we’ve got police following up that vehicle and potentially the male offender today as we go,” he said. “We’re pretty confident we know who the offender is.
“Thankfully she wasn’t physically harmed but obviously (it was) quite a harrowing incident for a young person and not something that we hope that would happen regularly.
“We’re trying to find (the suspect) ASAP and put them before the courts.”
The Bulletin understands the suspect being sought by police is a Logan man with significant prior offending.
The incident comes as more than 20,000 school leavers descend on Surfers Paradise for the second week of Schoolies.
It was understood the woman robbed in Surfers Paradise was returning from work and had not been participating in Schoolies.
