‘Real mess’: Burleigh Heads surrounded by construction

A Burleigh Heads karaoke hotspot has shut down, but a new venue is set to fill the void and its owner say they are confident they’ll survive the light-rail construction plaguing the suburb.

Karaoke bar Suzy BBQ closed its doors on March 9 after almost two years of trading on one of the most high-profile sections of the Gold Coast Highway.

Suzy BBQ’s owners said it was a “bittersweet goodbye” but thanked locals for welcoming them with open arms.

“Thank you so much to everyone who has dined with us or woken up with sore soju heads and for those who have sung their hearts out at karaoke … Suzy loves you all.”

The prolific restaurateurs behind Surfers Paradise Thai restaurant Nahm Talay Thai, Isle of Capri’s Valyn Thai and Pacific Fair’s Chongco Thai will be taking over the vacant space.

Pat Jiranuchaiwattana and her husband Vitchaya Hasitawet said they were “scared” to face the light rail stage 3 construction, which would be continuing on the doorstep of their new LimLay Thai restaurant.

“However, I think we can make this restaurant a destination before the construction is done,” Ms Jiranuchaiwattana said.

“I believe good food and nice restaurants can bring people to come visit.

“We’ll be waiting patiently for the construction and G:Link to be done. I believe it will bring even more people to Burleigh.”

She said they were excited to bring Thai street food to Burleigh Heads while still serving up classic meals such as pad Thai, massaman curry, cashew nut stir fry, high-grade lamb racks and fresh oysters.

Ms Jiranuchaiwattana said they would spend up to $1.5 million on the Burleigh Heads fit-out, including knocking down the wall between the former Suzy BBQ and Ghanda Clothing store.

She said LimLay Thai street food and bar would open in mid June.
