A SECOND gay, lesbian and transgender friendly nightclub is opening in central Surfers Paradise after a major makeover of an underground venue.
Well-known former gay hotspot MP’s is reopening under the same name but with new owners after a fitout running into several hundred thousand dollars.
The revamped MP’s, in a central arcade off party strip Orchid Avenue and just past new R & B nightclub Hennessy, has a new sound system, decor and lounge-type booths.
It will launch in mid-January, just months after a nearby Cavill Mall gay-friendly bar relaunched as Rise nightclub.
MP’s spokesperson Claire Kingston said it would have showgirls and drag queens performing regularly and was for anyone wanting a non-judgmental atmosphere.
“We are not trying to go into competition with anyone. We are a mixed venue proudly catering for the gay, lesbian, bi and transgender community,” she said.
“We just want people to know it’s going to be a great place to come and you will feel safe,” she said, adding all sexualities were welcome.
“If you want to express yourself and be covered glitter when you come in, that’s fine – just as long as it’s not going to get on the furniture,” she said.
The venue, with capacity for 350, was licensed until 3am last drinks and would open from 9pm Wednesday through to Sunday.
In an update dated November 7, the MP’s nightclub Facebook page assured patrons the wait will be worth it.
“Due to building delays, the club will not be opening ’til January 2018. We apologise for the inconvenience, but rest assured sexy people ... MP’s will be opening with state of art lighting, sound system and totally refurbished decor. The wait will be worth it!”
Surfers Paradise Licensed Venues Association president Tim Martin said he hoped there would be enough room for MP’s as well as Rise.
“The more diverse our town becomes and what it offers, then hopefully it draws in a different crowd,” he said.
Mr Martin said many heterosexual people tended to visit gay-friendly venues as well.
