SOUTHPORT landscape architects have been given three months to create designs for a revamp of The Spit which showcase its natural beauty.
State Development Cameron Dick said Place Design Group have been selected to undertake the work for the Moondarewa Spit foreshore parkland improvements and the Seaway Promenade project.
MAJOR STEP FORWARD FOR SPIT MASTER PLAN
He admitted the challenge would be to create “welcoming spaces with a uniquely Gold Coast identity”.
“We’re aiming to create special destinations at The Spit that reflect the Gold Coast’s relaxed, outdoor way of life,” Mr Dick said.
“These areas are loved by locals and visitors alike because they connect people to the natural environment and waterways.”
The Government is investing more than $5 million to upgrade Moondarewa Spit and the Seaway Promenade as part of the $60 million master plan focused on improving community facilities while enhancing the natural environment.
Mr Dick said the design and construction phases of the project were expected to generate at least 16 jobs, unlocking even more employment as the new facilities attract more visitors to The Spit.
WHY SOUTHPORT ROADS ARE IN GRIDLOCK
Gold Coast Waterways Authority (GCWA) will deliver the projects on behalf of the Government with the deadline set for the Christmas holiday season.
GCWA CEO Hal Morris said the creative design scope covers landscaping, picnic shelters, foreshore restoration, a public amenities block, beach showers, water refilling stations along with shared cycling and walking paths.
“We’re excited to be getting on with the job of bringing the community’s vision for The Spit to life,” Mr Morris said.
“We’re asking Place Design Group to come up with designs that reflect the natural beauty of our waterways city and our relaxed lifestyle.”
‘TIME TO GET ON’ WITH SPIT MASTER PLAN
Place Design Group Director Clint Wood, who regards The Spit as one of the city’s most important public places, welcomed the government and council commitment.
“The public realm is such a crucial part of the life blood of the Gold Coast, and The Spit has a long history as one of our most important public realms,” Mr Wood said.
“We look forward to enhancing this much-loved destination with improved access, amenity and environmental outcomes, and ensuring an enduring and sustainable future for locals and tourists to enjoy,” he said.
Design works are planned to be completed in three months with construction due to commence mid-2020.
