The Gold Coast has an amazing history, and a bright future.
The Gold Coast has an amazing history, and a bright future.

PATRICK Macnamara was in many ways, a quintessential Gold Coaster.

In 1885, when the fiery Irishman from Limerick set up shop in Lawson St, Southport, the Gold Coast was a phrase 70 years away from conception.

There were just 300 people living here in what was a sleepy fishing village.

But Macnamara did not see it that way. He saw a city with a big future.

So when he switched on the press to launch the Southern Queensland Bulletin newspaper, he took a step towards that vision.

135 years later, the Gold Coast is still growing. And the Southern Queensland Bulletin, long since renamed the Gold Coast Bulletin, has been on that journey every step of the way.

Today, our local journalists work long hours to cover the stories that really matter.

When there are triumphs, our journalists are there.

When there are tragedies, natural disasters like fires and floods, we’re there too.

We were there at the Southport floods in 1987. We were there when bushfires claimed homes in the hinterland last month.

And there with you throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

There providing stories providing critical safety information on our website which remained free.

But the stories behind the stories – the real human insights – are for our subscribers only.

Local subscribers helping to fund the vital work that we do. Helping us campaign and win victories for this city - as we are doing around the issue of the border closure.
