Kirra Beach has reopened after “masses of rubbish” washed up on Sunday.

The Gold Coast City Council said on Monday morning the closed section, between the beach and Kirra Groyne was open again while investigations continue into the debris.

“The city has reopened the section of beach between Kirra Beach and Kirra Groyne,” a council spokeswoman said in a statement.

“City officers have removed majority of the debris and they will continue to monitor the situation today.

“We ask beachgoers to report any sightings of unusual debris to lifeguards on duty in the area.”

It came 24 hours after sections of the world-famous sand was closed after unusual debris washed up following the weekend’s torrential downpour.

Rubbish, including tampon wraps, medication bottles, hoses, combs and soy sauce containers were found on Kirra Beach on Sunday morning.

The Save Our Southern Gold Coast social media page posted photographs showing the unusual items.

“This is Kirra Beach this morning … masses of rubbish, tampon wraps, soy bottles, medication, hoses and the list goes on,” page founder and former political candidate Kath Down posted on Sunday.

“Off to the lab again”.

A council spokeswoman said in a statement that officers were investigating.

“A combination of human-generated debris has washed up in a section of beach between Kirra Beach and Kirra Groyne, following heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours,” she said in a statement.

“This section of beach has been closed as the City investigates and commences clean up.

We ask the community to stay clear of this area and please report any sightings of debris on other parts of the beach.”

It comes just days after nine Sydney beaches – including Manly – were closed after unusual ball-shaped debris washed up.

The NSW Environment Protection Authority is still investigating.
