A whale has been rescued after being caught in shark nets off the Gold Coast only one week into the official migration season.
Sea World communications manager Mitchell Olivey confirmed the humpback was trapped in shark nets off Mermaid Beach.
He said they worked with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and were able to untangle the whale at about 7.20am.
The whale was believed to be caught in the nets on Monday evening.
It marks the first whale snared in shark nets for the 2023 migration season after more than five whales were caught off the Gold Coast in 2022.
“Enough is enough,” he said.
“Eight whales caught on Queensland’s cruel shark culling equipment in less than three months is a nightmarish beginning to the whale migration season.”
Mr Clark said it was time for the “outdated” and “ineffective” nets to be replaced by modern alternatives.
