TWO of the city’s top business leaders have pulled up board position seats for the city’s peak tourism body.
Business powerhouse Rebecca Frizelle OAM and Queensland Airports Limited CEO Amelia Evans have joined Destination Gold Coast’s board of directors – their sights firmly set on a “golden window of opportunity in the next decade”.
Ms Frizelle’s appointment comes after Nick Scott formally stepped down in November after serving six years on the board as a city appointee.
Ms Evans was appointed as a member-elected director at the recent Destination Gold Coast annual general meeting.
“The Gold Coast is on a really great platform to not just rebuild its $5.9 billion visitor economy, but further position ourselves stronger, both domestically and internationally,” Ms Frizelle said.
Ms Frizelle, who is the 50 per cent co-owner of the Gold Coast Titans, deputy chancellor at Griffith University and on the organising committee of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games, added: “With the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games in the palm of our hand, there is a golden window of opportunity in the next decade that we must capitalise on and through citywide collaboration we are already taking positive strides forward.”
Ms Evans said her new appointment was a “great honour” and expressed her excitement at what is a “pivotal time”.
“These past years have shown the great resilience of our city and tourism industry, and I do believe our brightest days are ahead of us as we look to the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics,” she said.
“The demand to visit the Gold Coast is incredibly strong and we’ve seen that through our airport, with passenger numbers domestically well and truly at pre-COVID levels and international numbers climbing steadily.
“Our focus must now be on repositioning the Gold Coast as a destination by challenging any legacy perceptions. It’s crucial we use this decade before the 2032 Games to best position the Gold Coast to shine on an international stage, by finding new ways to tell our story. When we succeed at this, the benefits will be felt well beyond 2032.”
Destination Gold Coast chair Adrienne Readings welcomed the new board members. “Both Rebecca and Amelia are respected professionals who are passionate about the city and will provide some great insights,” she said.
