A NEW species of mouse-like marsupial has been discovered in the Gold Coast Hinterland.

According to media reports, a black-tailed antechinus has been found in the high-altitude, wet areas of Springbook National Park.

The rare marsupial is well-known for its deadly breeding habits after scientists last year discovered the male of the species was dying from stress after overenthusiastic marathon mating sessions.

Dr Andrew Baker, from the Queensland University of Technology, said researchers were applying for an endangered species listing for the rare antechinus.

The animal has a shaggy body, a very short-furred tail and black feet.
