An independent analysis of newly released 2023 NAPLAN results has revealed the Gold Coast’s top performing schools for Year 5 and Year 9.
For the first time in three years, The Southport School has bested Somerset College for highest Year 5 NAPLAN results, scoring an average of 550.8. St Hilda’s School came in at second with a an average of 544.0 also besting Somerset College which ranked third with an average result of 539.0 – a single point drop from it’s top performance last year.
However the Mudgeeraba school ranked first for Year 9 results with an average of 635.4 – also a dip from its 2022 average of 637.2.
A B Paterson College in Arundel was the second best for the region with an average score of 624.8, while Emmanuel College in Carrara was the third best secondary school with an average score of 616.2.
Meanwhile, Mastery Schools Australia ranked the lowest in the city for both its primary and secondary results recording an average of 400 and 498.4 respectively.
While the school’s primary results are just above the Queensland state average, its secondary results dip below the state average of 554.4.
Upper Coomera State College’s Year 3 cohort averaged 439.2 as the second lowest, with Cedar Creek State School’s primary doing slightly better at 444.6.
For secondary results, Keebra Park State High School recorded the second lowest average at 509.2 while Upper Coomera State College scored 518. Across the Gold Coast, 14 secondary schools ranked lower than the state average.

To determine how each school performed in 2023, the scores for all five test subjects for the student cohort (Year 5 or Year 9) were combined and the average found.
Special schools, schools with fewer than 20 students enrolled, and schools that did not report any results for NAPLAN subjects were excluded from the analysis.
The figures were independently compiled from the Federal Government’s MySchool website.
