Children have been evacuated as a fire has ripped through two storeys of a Gold Coast school.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services were called to Labrador State School on Imperial Parade in Labrador at around 11.42am.

As fire alarms rang across the empty playground, firefighters in breathing apparatus entered the high-set year six classrooms, next to the school’s community kitchen garden project.

Year six teacher Aidan Bosworth said the fire had destroyed a book corner and much of the children’s work for the year to date.

“I don’t know a lot about what’s happened,” he said.

“There’s a lot in there, things you collect over years of teaching.”

The Education Department said initial concerns the damaged building contained asbestos were unfounded.

Children who were attending the school’s holiday daycare were evacuated on to the oval.

A QFES spokesperson said they were uncertain on the cause of the blaze but were continuing to investigate.

Queensland Ambulance Services were called to the scene around 11.49am but there were no reports of any injuries.

The blaze was extinguished at 12.20pm

MP Sam O’Connor, whose office is across the road, was at the scene.

“I’m glad they got onto it before it spread, it could have been far worse,” he said.

“It’s devastating, thinking we’ve got kids coming back after next week.

“There is a really good school community here so I’m sure they’ll all come together and help.”
