Dozens of firefighters have spent much of Friday tackling a massive grassfire on the northern Gold Coast.
However, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) has managed to get the 40-50 hectare blaze at Pimpama under control by this afternoon.
It was expected the fire – which has not been threatening life or properties – would be extinguished sometime Friday night, a QFES spokesman said.
About 25 firefighting crews had been called to the fire along Green Meadows Rd and Kerkin Rd, near the Pimpama River Conservation Area.
Earlier, firefighters warned motorists to avoid driving due to the huge fire front.
QFES was called to the fire about 6.30am and by 10am a water bombing helicopter had been called in.
A warning was issued by QFES to avoid smoke in the surrounding areas.
QFES urged residents and motorists to follow health directions and avoid driving through smoke where possible.
“Stay indoors and close windows and doors,” it said.
“Keep respiratory medication close by.
“Reduced air quality may cause health impacts for some people.”
Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics have been on standby at the fire.
