Australia's travel ban is worse than Saudi Arabia's

GOLD Coast travellers can now take advantage of a new Qantas route to Perth.

Announced on Tuesday, the airline will operate three return services a week from September.

Queensland Airports Limited CEO Chris Mills Flights said flights would run Friday to Sunday, with a late afternoon departure from the Gold Coast and a morning departure from Perth.

“We have seen numbers build strongly as state and territory leaders take a more consistent and pragmatic approach to border controls,” he said.

Qantas CEO: Border closures ‘politically driven’ - July 2020

QANTAS CEO Alan Joyce has labelled Queensland’s border closure “politically driven” as Australia’s tourism industry continues to struggle through the COVID-19 pandemic.

It comes as Gold Coast business owners and city leaders demand a coronavirus recovery plan from the State Government.

Mr Joyce blasted border closures across the country and said: “When you have states with zero cases closing their borders to states with zero cases there doesn’t seem to be any medical reason or health reason or any logical reason for those to remain closed.

“What we are after is a framework that is very clear. When do borders close? Because they may have to close again in the future.

“When do they open? Based on the scientific information that’s available.

“(We need to know) so we have clarity for our people, for the tourism industry and for the travelling public.

“And at the moment it doesn’t seem to be medically or scientifically based. It seems to be more politically driven.”

Chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young has previously said the border will remain shut until clusters of community transmission were brought under control in New South Wales, Victoria and the ACT.

Qantas earlier announced a statutory loss before tax of $2.7 billion for the 2020 financial year.

It also spent more than $600 million on redundancies and retired all 747s months ahead of schedule.
