Police have charged a man after he allegedly launched a savage attack on a man and a mum with her toddler in a public park, leaving witnesses “horrified”.

Police were called to the Gold Coast’s Olympus Dr in Robina on Friday at 4.50pm after reports of an alleged assault by a man.

A 31-year-old man has been charged with two counts of assault.

He was due to face Southport Magistrates Court on Monday.

A woman who claimed to have witnessed the incident, Kellie Perkes, said she was “horrified” at what she saw.

Ms Perkes said a man swung a garbage bag – with “something very hard in it” – hitting the mum in the face.

Early information indicates the alleged offender had a verbal altercation with a 34-year-old Varsity Lakes man and the 31-year-old Robina mum, before assaulting both of them, according to police.

The woman was found with extensive facial injuries by Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics, who were called to the scene about 4.55pm.

She was taken to Robina hospital in a stable condition.

Locals are being told to be wary by Robina resident Georgia Douglas, who posted to Facebook on Friday afternoon, warning after she heard a man had allegedly attacked a woman at the park, understood to be Lake Lomandra Park.

Ms Perkes said: “I was in the park this afternoon and witnessed this poor woman get assaulted,” she said.

“I’m lucky he didn’t attack me.”

Ms Perkes said she saw the woman filming her son and assumed the man thought she was taking photos of him – and then attacked her.

“He threw a water bottle at her first and then hit her in the face,” she claimed, adding: “He hit her with a garbage bag that has something very hard in it. There was blood everywhere. I wouldn’t be surprised if she has a broken nose.”

Ms Perkes said she stayed with the woman until the ambulance arrived and assessed her.

“I was so scared he would come back,” she said.

Ms Perkes said she decided to take a different route home after she was too worried he would come back.

“My nine year old was with me and witnessed it as well,” she said.
