A POLICE investigation is underway after a group of people draped a banner over a major Gold Coast highway overpass displaying a swastika and hate messages.

The group, clad in black clothing and masks, were seen dangling the crude sign over the Helensvale overpass on the Pacific Motorway on Saturday afternoon.

The overpass is a short distance from family-friendly attractions Movie World, Wet n’Wild, Outback Spectacular and Paradise Country.

In a photo that has emerged on social media, one member of the group performs a ‘Nazi salute’ as two others hold the sign.

A fourth man holds a flag, which can not be clearly identitified in the photo.

The banner reads: “You want to ban this (image of a swastika below), but not this (image of the Star of David and hammer and sickle above).

“Hitler was right. NSM Aus,” it reads.

In the United States, the NSM (National Socialist Movement) is a white supremecist group.

It is not clear whether the NSM written on the banner has any connection to that group.

The group received massive backlash on social media, with one commenter calling them “Nazi pieces of s**t”.

“People are f***ing dangerous and stupid,” wrote another.

Another social media user called the group “cowards” and “scum of the earth”.

A Queensland Police spokesperson said authorities were aware of the matter and were investigating.

“We reiterate that this type of activity will not be tolerated,” the spokesperson said.

Police are now calling on any witnesses or anyone with further information to contact Policelink on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
