MEET Emily Cosson, a young Gold Coast pinball wizard taking on the world.
The Somerset College student, 16, is Australia’s No. 1 female player, and ranked 50th overall.
“I’ve been playing my whole life. My dad has been collecting pinball machines since I was young,” she said.
“I started playing in competitions when I was 12. Every machine is different. They are really just fun to play.”
This weekend she is in the Australia Pinball Championship at Timezone Coolangatta. It was brought to the city by her dad John Cosson, a surgeon who loves pinball.
“It’s been held in every other state and I wanted to bring it here,” he said.
“Emily is ridiculously good,” he said, adding she plays every weekend and goes to the US twice a year for the World Women’s Championships.
Emily said she played an hour or so a day to practice because it’s “kind of hard to keep up” with her top title.
The competition is this Saturday and Sunday at Timezone Coolangatta where 48 invited competitors will go head-to-head.
A share of $4000 is up for grabs. The winner gets to play in the Pinball World Championships in Florida, America on May 29-31.
