PARKWOOD-COOMBABAH is set to become the latest priority area for koala conservation on the Glitter Strip.
The council today announced the northern suburbs would join East Coomera-Pimpama, Burleigh Ridge and Elanora-Currumbin Waters as part of the city’s koala conservation plan.
Council planning chair Cameron Caldwell said creating another priority area signified the importance of the area to the local koala population.

“There are as many as 300 koalas in this area and we are committed to seeing that population flourish,” Cr Caldwell told the Gold Coast Bulletin.
The classification means the area will get priority resource allocation, habitat restoration and threats to koalas are to be identified and reduced.
An officer’s report to the council lifestyle committee earlier this week found distinct sub-populations of koalas in the suburbs from Parkwood through to Molendinar and Helensvale.
Full council next week is expected to endorse the recommendation.
