Partying young people have run amok at a luxury Gold Coast unit block where the penthouse sold for $3.8 million.
Witnesses said revellers were seen urinating and throwing beer bottles from the roof of the 77 Jefferson building in Palm Beach during a wild party on Australia Day.
“We were on the beach and we looked up at the building and saw these kids,” a witness told the Bulletin.
“The top has a pool and a barbecue area.
“The kids were jumping on top of the lift area. There’s no barricade. So if they fell, they’re falling off. And they looked highly intoxicated.
“I started worrying about them falling off and hitting other people.
“People started calling the police and then they started throwing bottles off.”
Another witness said residents of the building – where units were sold for between $1.29 million and $2.47 million – were “very angry” with what happened.
It is believed residents had locked the front door of the building to prevent any more young people gaining access, leading to scenes of mayhem on the street outside, with beer bottles smashed on the road and a road sign ripped from the ground.
A young boy was seen carrying the road sign with its spike protruding towards the foyer of the building, where a large crowd of young people was gathered.
“I think the locals closed it off, locked them out. And they (youths misbehaving on the street) were protesting,” a witness said.
“And then he (a teenage boy) has walked along with that spike. I think he was going to throw it through the window. Luckily one of his mates stopped him.
“And all the poor locals were coming out, spraying all the glass out of the foyer area.
I think they (the youths) were smashing bottles against the window, trying to get in.
“It was pretty hairy there for a bit.”
It is unknown how the partying youths initially gained access to the building.
The disturbance was brought to an end when police attended the scene.
A Queensland Police Service spokesperson told the Bulletin its investigation into the incident remained open and appealed to anyone with relevant photos or videos to contact them.
“Police were called to a Jefferson Lane address in Palm Beach at 4.30pm Friday, January 26 following a street disturbance involving multiple people,” the spokesperson said.
“Police spoke to multiple people at the scene; however, no formal complaints were forth coming.
“Investigations remain open.
“Anyone who has further information or has relevant vision are urged to contact police.”
The 10-storey 77 Jefferson building was constructed in 2020. All of its full-floor residences was sold within three months of the project’s launch, while its penthouse – which occupies the ninth and tenth floors – was sold for $3.8 million in December 2020.
