The north of the Gold Coast is to get a stunning $50 million new community facility which will service the city’s fastest growing suburb.
The Bulletin has obtained plans for the Ormeau Community Hub which northern-based councillor Mark Hammel predicts will be a huge addition to the area.
Early concept plans showcase a modern design with a large car park, library, multipurpose hall and cafe. The facility is much larger than temporary buildings used in suburbs further south.
After a lengthy investigation of multiple locations, the facility is proposed to sit on a high
traffic site off Eggersdorf Road, with the creation of the new access road to the Stewart
Family Sports precinct forming the access point.
The Ormeau Community Hub will form part of the overall Stewarts Family Sports Precinct
and sit elevated on Eggersdorf Road, overlooking the site.
Cr Hammel said he expected the facility would be well received by the community.
“Residents of Ormeau have been calling out for a community hub and library for years now
– I believe this delivers the outcome they were hoping for and more,” Cr Hammel said.
The Future Gold Coast series late last year focused on the city being home to one million people by the early 2040s, revealing the fastest future-growing suburbs will be in a northern stretch on the western side of the Pacific Motorway.
Pimpama which was the city’s biggest-growing suburb for a decade will be overtaken by a mega city encompassing Oxenford, Coomera and Ormeau.
Cr Hammel said he was aware of the increasing demands on existing community facilities.
“Our interim library space at the existing Ormeau Community Centre has demonstrated a
clear demand for a larger library and community space – this facility will deliver on that,” he
said.
“In such a fast-growing part of the city, this community hub will be an important place
where residents can gather, host events, form and grow local community groups and more.”
“I am very proud as local councillor to have worked with City officers to get this project off
the ground and into the design phase.
“While these are early concept plans and subject to change, the ideas and the funding are there ready to go.”
The Ormeau Community Hub is scheduled for detailed design in 2024/25, and then
construction in 2025/26.
“The land is known as Vista Park – City officers named it this some years ago because of the
stunning view,” Cr Hammel said.
