Australia’s fastest-growing suburb is gaining something most other suburbs are losing – a post office.
The postal facility will open at the Pimpama City shopping centre on June 30 and will service the more than 40,000 people who live in the area.
Coomera MP Michael Crandon has welcomed the move after campaigning on it for nearly five years.
“This is the fastest-growing suburb yet we did not have a post office anywhere near us, but now we are becoming one of the very few places where a new branch is opening,” he said.
“It is a great location and very visible, so it is a recognition of the needs of the area, its growing size and its future.
“It is a show of faith in the future and a big change from just a few years ago when it was hard to get a new post box in the area, so it is a major achievement.”
The nearest post offices are currently in Ormeau and Upper Coomera, both west of the M1 motorway.
Mr Crandon was backed in his campaign for a post office by civic and political leaders.
Australia Post executive general manager of network operations Rod Barnes last year told the Bulletin the Gold Coast was an increasingly important market for postage, with a new parcel and mail facility opening at Arundel.
“As one of Queensland’s biggest cities, we’ve seen parcel volumes increase by 97 per cent since 2019, with data indicating almost 280,000 Gold Coast households shopped online in the past year,” he said at the time.
“This increased demand has seen the Gold Coast become our largest posting zone outside the major capitals, with substantial inbound and outbound product.”
Having secured victory on the postal office, Mr Crandon said he was turning his attention to securing a Department of Transport and Main Roads office for the suburb.
The nearest are at Helensvale or Beenleigh.
“I am not confident of getting anything in the upcoming state budget in June but that won’t stop me pushing for one,” he said.
“It has been established that there is a need for it, because Beenleigh and Helensvale are a long way if you need to front up to an office.”
